AC 3 Tier is the sweet spot of Indian Railways — air-conditioned comfort without the premium price of 2A or 1A. It's where most middle-class India travels, and for good reason. Here's the complete lowdown.
Quick Facts
Class code: 3A Coach markings: B1, B2, B3... (sometimes HA1, HA2 on newer rakes) Berths per coach: 64 (LHB) or 72 (older ICF coaches) Air conditioning: Yes (centralized AC) Bedding: Provided (blanket, pillow, sheet) Charging points: Yes (Indian 3-pin, USB on newer coaches) Curtains: Yes (between bays and on side berths) Toilets: 2 per coach (cleaner than SL, usually with soap dispensers)Berth Layout
3A layout is similar to Sleeper but with fewer berths per coach (LHB coaches):
Each bay: 6 berths (2 Lower, 2 Middle, 2 Upper) Side berths: 2 per section (Side Lower, Side Upper)Newer LHB coaches have 64 berths. The extra space compared to 72-berth SL coaches means slightly wider aisles and a bit more breathing room.
What You Get
Air conditioning: Centralized AC maintains temperature around 22-25°C. Blankets are provided because the AC can feel quite cold at night. Dress in layers — a light jacket or shawl is useful. Bedding roll: Each berth gets a sealed bedding pack containing:- 1 blanket
- 1 pillow
- 1 bed sheet
- 1 small towel (on some trains)

Tips for 3A Travel
Carry a light blanket anyway. The provided blanket is thin. If you get cold easily, your own light blanket or shawl helps. Lower berth is gold. Especially if you want to sit comfortably during the day. Middle and upper berth passengers descend to the lower berth for sitting during daytime, so lower berth holders share their space. But they control the sitting arrangement. Middle berth is the worst. You can't use it during the day (it's folded up). At night, it's wedged between the lower and upper berths with the least headroom. If you can avoid it, do. Upper berth is private. You can lie down at any time — day or night. Nobody claims your space. The tradeoff is climbing up and down, and limited headroom. But for introverts or people who want to sleep through the journey, upper berth is actually ideal. Keep the curtain etiquette. Don't leave the bay curtain open at night if your bay-mates have closed it. Don't pull it shut during the day unless everyone in the bay agrees. Meals on Rajdhani/Duronto are included. If your 3A ticket is on a Rajdhani or Duronto, meals are part of the fare. On regular trains, you order from the pantry or e-Catering.Fare Examples
