AC 3 Tier Economy (3E) — Budget AC Travel Explained
Guide to AC 3 Tier Economy class on Indian Railways. How it differs from regular 3A, fare savings, coach layout, and which trains offer 3E.
AC 3 Tier Economy (3E) is Indian Railways' answer to the gap between non-AC Sleeper and AC 3 Tier. It offers air conditioning at a price point closer to Sleeper than 3A. If you want AC comfort without the full 3A price tag, 3E is worth considering.
What Is AC 3 Economy?
3E is a newer class introduced to make AC travel more accessible. The concept: fit more berths per coach than regular 3A (by slightly reducing space), and pass the savings to passengers through lower fares.
Class code: 3E Coach markings: EA1, EA2... or varies by zone Berths per coach: 83 (vs 64 in regular 3A) Air conditioning: Yes Bedding: Provided Curtains: Limited (varies by train)How 3E Differs From Regular 3A
| Feature | AC 3 Tier (3A) | AC 3 Economy (3E) |
|---|---|---|
| Berths per coach | 64 | 83 |
| Side berths per section | 2 (SL, SU) | 3 (SL, SM, SU) |
| Middle berth in bay | Yes | Yes |
| Fare | Higher | 8-10% cheaper |
| Space per berth | Standard | Slightly less |
| Curtains | Yes | Limited |
| Charging points | Yes | Yes |
| Bedding | Yes | Yes |
The 3E Experience
Similar to 3A in most ways. The bay berths (Lower, Middle, Upper) are identical to regular 3A. You get AC, bedding, and charging points. The coach looks and feels like a regular 3A coach. The side berth section is tighter. With 3 berths stacked instead of 2, each side berth has less vertical space. The Side Middle position in 3E is particularly cramped — even less headroom than a bay middle berth. Coach feels busier. 83 passengers per coach vs 64 means more people in the aisle, more activity, and a slightly more crowded feel. Not as chaotic as Sleeper, but noticeably fuller than regular 3A.Fare Savings
The fare is typically 8-10% less than regular 3A:
| Route | 3A Fare | 3E Fare | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delhi to Mumbai | ~1,700 | ~1,550 | ~150 |
| Delhi to Kolkata | ~1,800 | ~1,650 | ~150 |
| Mumbai to Goa | ~1,000 | ~920 | ~80 |
Which Trains Have 3E?
3E is available on select trains, primarily:
- Humsafar Express trains (specifically designed with 3E coaches)
- Some Rajdhani and Duronto trains that have added 3E coaches
- Special trains and new-generation rakes
Not all trains offer 3E. Check availability for your specific train on indianrail.app.
Humsafar Express — The 3E Flagship
Humsafar Express trains are entirely 3E class — every coach is AC 3 Economy. These trains were introduced on popular routes to provide affordable AC travel. Features specific to Humsafar trains:
- All 3E coaches
- GPS-based passenger information display
- Bio-toilets
- Fire detection system
- Mobile/laptop charging points at every berth
- LED lighting
Should You Choose 3E or 3A?
Choose 3E if:- You want AC travel at the lowest AC price
- You're getting a bay berth (Lower/Middle/Upper) — the experience is nearly identical to 3A
- Budget savings matter more than marginal comfort differences
- The train timing suits your schedule
- You might get a side berth (side berths in 3E are tighter)
- You want a slightly less crowded coach
- The fare difference is minimal for your route
- Regular 3A is available on a better-timed train
For side berths, regular 3A is more comfortable because you only have 2 berths stacked instead of 3. The extra Side Middle in 3E makes all three side berths feel cramped.
Booking 3E
On IRCTC, select "3E" or "AC 3 Economy" as the class when searching. The booking process is identical to any other class. 3E often has better availability than 3A because fewer people know about it — use this to your advantage on busy routes.
