Spotted a typo on your PAN card? Maybe the name is misspelled, or your date of birth is wrong. PAN correction is actually simpler than most people think — you don't need to apply for a new PAN. Just request a correction on the existing one.

Here's how to fix any detail on your PAN card without leaving your house.

What Can Be Corrected on a PAN Card?

  • Name (first, middle, last — or entire name)
  • Father's name
  • Date of birth / Date of incorporation
  • Gender
  • Photo
  • Signature
  • Address (as printed on the card)
  • Contact details (phone, email)
The correction process updates the Income Tax Department's records AND reprints your PAN card with the corrected information.

Online PAN Correction via NSDL (Protean)

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Visit onlineservices.nsdl.com
  2. Select "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data"
  3. Enter your existing 10-digit PAN number
  4. Fill in the correction form:
- Tick only the fields you want to correct - Enter the correct information - Leave unchanged fields as they are
  1. Upload supporting documents for each corrected field
  2. Upload updated photo and signature (if changing those)
  3. Pay Rs. 107 + GST (~Rs. 126) for physical card, or Rs. 66 + GST (~Rs. 78) for e-PAN only
  4. Submit and note the Acknowledgement Number

Documents Required for Correction

Field Being CorrectedDocuments Needed
NamePassport, gazette notification, marriage certificate, matriculation certificate
Father's NameBirth certificate, passport, matriculation certificate
Date of BirthBirth certificate, passport, matriculation marksheet
GenderPassport, birth certificate, matriculation certificate
AddressAadhaar, passport, utility bill, bank passbook
The name on your correction document must exactly match what you're entering in the form. Even a spacing difference can cause rejection.

PAN Correction via UTIITSL

  1. Visit pan.utiitsl.com
  2. Click "Changes/Correction in PAN Card"
  3. Fill in the form with your PAN number and correction details
  4. Upload documents
  5. Pay the fee and submit
The process is nearly identical to NSDL. Pick whichever portal you're more comfortable with.

Aadhaar-Based Correction (Fastest Method)

If your Aadhaar already has the correct information, you can use Aadhaar e-KYC for correction:

  1. Select Aadhaar e-KYC during the correction process
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number
  3. Verify with OTP
  4. The system pulls your name, DOB, gender, and address from Aadhaar
  5. PAN records are updated to match Aadhaar
This skips document upload entirely and is processed much faster — usually within 3-5 working days. Important: Make sure your Aadhaar details are correct first. If Aadhaar also has the wrong info, update Aadhaar first, wait for it to reflect, then use it for PAN correction.

When Correction Gets Rejected

Common rejection reasons:

  • Document doesn't support the change: For example, using a utility bill to correct your name won't work. You need an identity document.
  • Mismatch between form and document: The corrected name must be character-for-character identical to the supporting document.
  • Photo doesn't meet specifications: White background, front-facing, recent passport-size. No selfies.
  • Signature scan is unclear: Sign with dark ink on plain white paper. The signature should be within the box boundaries.
If rejected, you can resubmit without additional charges.

Special Scenarios

Name Change After Marriage

Use your marriage certificate as the supporting document. The new name should include your spouse's surname if that's how the marriage certificate records it.

Correcting a Minor's PAN

The parent/guardian who originally applied must submit the correction request. The minor's birth certificate or school certificate serves as the supporting document.

Company/Firm PAN Correction

Business entities use the same portal but need to provide the certificate of incorporation, partnership deed, or trust deed as supporting documents.

FAQs

Will my PAN number change after correction? No. Your 10-digit PAN number remains the same forever. Only the demographic details and the physical card change. Can I correct multiple fields at once? Yes. Tick all the fields you want to correct in a single application. You'll pay only once. My PAN and Aadhaar have different names. Which one should I correct? Ideally, make both match. But if you must choose one, correct PAN to match Aadhaar — because Aadhaar-PAN linking validates name matching, and Aadhaar is harder to change. I received my corrected PAN but the old one is still linked to my bank account. What do I do? Nothing. The PAN number doesn't change, so all linked services continue to work. Your bank may update their records automatically during the next KYC verification. Can I apply for correction at a PAN centre instead of online? Yes. Visit any TIN-NSDL facilitation centre or UTIITSL PAN centre with your documents and the correction form. The fee is the same.
