A PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is something you'll need the moment you start earning, open a bank account, or do practically any financial transaction above Rs. 50,000 in India. It's your tax identity — issued by the Income Tax Department and managed through NSDL and UTIITSL.

If you don't have one yet, here's exactly how to get it done online without visiting any office.

Who Needs a PAN Card?

  • Any individual earning taxable income
  • Anyone opening a bank account
  • People buying/selling property or vehicles
  • Businesses, firms, trusts, and companies
  • NRIs with income sources in India
  • Minors (through a representative assessee — usually a parent)
Essentially, if you deal with money in India in any significant way, you need a PAN.

Two Portals for PAN Application

The Income Tax Department has authorized two agencies:

PortalWebsiteForm
Protean (formerly NSDL)onlineservices.nsdl.comForm 49A (Indian citizens), Form 49AA (foreigners)
UTIITSLpan.utiitsl.comSame forms
Both are equally valid. Most people use the Protean/NSDL portal — the interface is slightly more intuitive.

Step-by-Step: Apply for PAN on NSDL Portal

  1. Visit onlineservices.nsdl.com
  2. Select "New PAN — Indian Citizen (Form 49A)"
  3. Fill in your personal details:
- Full name (must match your identity document exactly) - Date of birth - Email and mobile number - Aadhaar number (mandatory for individuals)
  1. Select your AO Code (Assessing Officer) — the system auto-suggests based on your area
  2. Upload documents:
- Identity Proof: Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, or driving license - Address Proof: Aadhaar, utility bill, bank statement, passport - Date of Birth Proof: Aadhaar, birth certificate, SSLC marksheet, passport - Photograph: Recent passport-size photo (JPEG, max 300KB) - Signature: Sign on white paper and scan (JPEG, max 300KB)
  1. Choose delivery preference:
- e-PAN only (sent to email, Rs. 66 + GST) - Physical PAN card + e-PAN (Rs. 107 + GST for Indian address, Rs. 1,017 + GST for foreign address)
  1. Pay online via debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI
  2. Submit the application and note your Acknowledgement Number
If you have an Aadhaar with a linked mobile number, you can use Aadhaar-based e-KYC — this skips the document upload entirely. The system pulls your details from UIDAI directly.

Fee Structure (2026)

OptionIndian AddressForeign Address
e-PAN onlyRs. 66 + GST = ~Rs. 78Rs. 66 + GST
Physical + e-PANRs. 107 + GST = ~Rs. 126Rs. 1,017 + GST = ~Rs. 1,200
The e-PAN is a digitally signed PDF with a QR code — it's legally valid everywhere. Getting just the e-PAN saves money and time.

Processing Time

  • e-PAN (Aadhaar e-KYC): Issued within 48 hours to your email
  • e-PAN (document upload): 5-7 working days
  • Physical PAN card: 15-20 working days via India Post

How to Track PAN Application Status

  1. Go to tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html
  2. Select "PAN — New/Change Request"
  3. Enter your 15-digit Acknowledgement Number
  4. The status will show: Submitted → Under Processing → Dispatched
Once dispatched, you'll also receive a tracking number for the physical card via Speed Post.

Instant e-PAN via Income Tax Portal

If you have an Aadhaar card with a linked mobile number and haven't applied for PAN before, you can get an Instant e-PAN for free:

  1. Visit eportal.incometax.gov.in
  2. Click "Instant e-PAN"
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number
  4. Validate with OTP sent to Aadhaar-linked mobile
  5. e-PAN is generated instantly and sent to your email
This method is completely free and takes about 10 minutes. The catch: it only works for first-time PAN applicants.

Common Mistakes That Cause Rejection

  • Name mismatch: Your name on the PAN form must exactly match your identity document. "Rajesh K" on Aadhaar and "Rajesh Kumar" on PAN form will cause issues.
  • Poor quality photo or signature scan: Blurry images get rejected. Use a plain white background for photos.
  • Wrong AO Code: If unsure, use the auto-suggestion feature. Wrong AO Code doesn't cause rejection but may delay processing.
  • Missing middle name: If your document shows a middle name, include it. Don't abbreviate what the document spells out fully.

FAQs

Can I have two PAN cards? No. Having more than one PAN is illegal and attracts a penalty of Rs. 10,000 under Section 272B. If you accidentally have two, surrender the duplicate using the PAN correction form. Is PAN card mandatory if I don't pay taxes? You still need it for bank accounts, property transactions, mutual fund investments, and cash transactions above Rs. 50,000. From a practical standpoint, you can't function without one. Can NRIs apply for PAN? Yes, using Form 49AA. NRIs don't need Aadhaar but must provide a valid passport as identity proof. What's the difference between PAN and TAN? PAN is for taxpayers (individuals, companies). TAN is for entities that deduct tax at source (employers, banks). They're different numbers for different purposes. My PAN card shows an old photo. Can I update it? Yes, apply for PAN correction/reprint on the same NSDL portal. Upload a new photo and pay the reprint fee.
