Moved to a new flat? Shifted cities for work? Your Aadhaar address needs to reflect where you actually live — banks, telecom companies, and government departments increasingly verify it against your current residence.

The good news: you can change your Aadhaar address entirely online, and UIDAI gives you three different methods to do it depending on what documents you have.

Three Ways to Change Aadhaar Address

Method 1: Standard Online Update (With Address Proof)

This is the most common method. You upload a valid address proof document and submit.

Steps:
  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Login with Aadhaar + OTP
  3. Click "Update Aadhaar" → Select "Address"
  4. Enter your new address carefully (it'll be printed exactly as you type it)
  5. Upload supporting document (scanned, max 2MB)
  6. Pay Rs. 50 via UPI/net banking/debit card
  7. Note down the URN for tracking
Accepted Documents:
  • Passport
  • Bank passbook or bank statement (max 3 months old)
  • Voter ID card
  • Electricity bill, water bill, gas bill (max 3 months old)
  • Post office passbook
  • Property tax receipt
  • Registered rent agreement
  • Government-issued address proof

Method 2: Head of Family (HoF) Based Address Update

Don't have a utility bill or address proof in your name? No problem. If a family member living at the same address has their Aadhaar linked to that address, they can act as your "Head of Family" to validate your address.

How it works:
  1. Login to myAadhaar portal
  2. Select "Address Update via HoF"
  3. Enter the Aadhaar number of the Head of Family
  4. The HoF receives an OTP — they must approve your request
  5. Once approved, your address updates to match theirs
  6. No document upload required, no fee
This is especially useful for students, homemakers, and anyone who doesn't have bills in their own name.

Method 3: Address Validation Letter (AVL)

If you have zero documents and no HoF, UIDAI will send a verification letter to your new address via India Post.

Steps:
  1. Login to myAadhaar
  2. Request an Address Validation Letter
  3. Enter your new address
  4. UIDAI sends a physical letter containing a Secret Code to that address
  5. Once you receive it, go back to myAadhaar and enter the secret code
  6. Your address gets updated — fee is Rs. 50
The letter typically arrives within 30 days. If it doesn't arrive, you can request it again.

What Your New Address Should Look Like

UIDAI has specific formatting requirements:

  • House/Building/Apartment: Flat 302, Skyline Heights
  • Street/Road/Lane: MG Road
  • Landmark: Near City Mall
  • Area/Locality: Koramangala
  • Village/Town/City: Bengaluru
  • District: Bengaluru Urban
  • State: Karnataka
  • PIN Code: 560034
Double-check everything before submitting. Typos like "Banglore" instead of "Bengaluru" are surprisingly common and will be printed exactly as entered on your Aadhaar.

Processing Time

MethodTimeline
Standard (with document)10-15 working days
Head of Family7-10 working days
Address Validation Letter30-45 days (includes postal delivery time)

Tracking Your Address Change

  1. Go to myAadhaar portal → "Check Update Status"
  2. Enter your URN and Aadhaar number
  3. Status will show: Submitted → Under Review → Approved/Rejected
If rejected, the reason is usually document quality or address mismatch. Resubmit with a clearer scan.

Common Issues and Fixes

"Your Aadhaar is locked" You need to unlock it first. Go to myAadhaar → "Lock/Unlock Aadhaar" → Unlock using OTP → Then proceed with address update. "OTP not received" Ensure your mobile number is still linked to Aadhaar. If it's changed, you'll need to visit an enrolment centre to update the mobile first, then come back for address change. "Address update rejected — document not clear" Scan the document at 300 DPI minimum. Take a photo in good lighting if using a phone camera. Make sure the address is fully visible and not cut off at edges. State or district dropdown mismatch Sometimes the PIN code auto-fills the wrong district. Manually correct it before submitting.

FAQs

Can I change my address to a different state? Yes. There's no restriction on inter-state address changes. Your Aadhaar is valid across India regardless of the address state. Does address change affect Aadhaar-linked services? No. Your Aadhaar number and biometrics remain the same. Only the address field changes. Bank accounts, mobile SIMs, and other linked services are unaffected. Can I use a rental agreement as address proof? Only if it's a registered rent agreement (stamped and registered with the sub-registrar). Unregistered agreements on plain paper are not accepted. How many times can I change my Aadhaar address? There's no official limit. People who move frequently can update as needed. Will my old Aadhaar card still work after address change? The physical card will still show the old address. Download your updated e-Aadhaar from the portal — that will have the new address and is equally valid everywhere.
