Aadhaar Address Change Online — Step-by-Step Guide for 2026
How to change your address on Aadhaar card online using the myAadhaar portal. Includes documents required, Head of Family method, and address validation letter process.
Moved to a new flat? Shifted cities for work? Your Aadhaar address needs to reflect where you actually live — banks, telecom companies, and government departments increasingly verify it against your current residence.
The good news: you can change your Aadhaar address entirely online, and UIDAI gives you three different methods to do it depending on what documents you have.
Three Ways to Change Aadhaar Address
Method 1: Standard Online Update (With Address Proof)
This is the most common method. You upload a valid address proof document and submit.
Steps:- Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
- Login with Aadhaar + OTP
- Click "Update Aadhaar" → Select "Address"
- Enter your new address carefully (it'll be printed exactly as you type it)
- Upload supporting document (scanned, max 2MB)
- Pay Rs. 50 via UPI/net banking/debit card
- Note down the URN for tracking
- Passport
- Bank passbook or bank statement (max 3 months old)
- Voter ID card
- Electricity bill, water bill, gas bill (max 3 months old)
- Post office passbook
- Property tax receipt
- Registered rent agreement
- Government-issued address proof
Method 2: Head of Family (HoF) Based Address Update
Don't have a utility bill or address proof in your name? No problem. If a family member living at the same address has their Aadhaar linked to that address, they can act as your "Head of Family" to validate your address.
How it works:- Login to myAadhaar portal
- Select "Address Update via HoF"
- Enter the Aadhaar number of the Head of Family
- The HoF receives an OTP — they must approve your request
- Once approved, your address updates to match theirs
- No document upload required, no fee
Method 3: Address Validation Letter (AVL)
If you have zero documents and no HoF, UIDAI will send a verification letter to your new address via India Post.
Steps:- Login to myAadhaar
- Request an Address Validation Letter
- Enter your new address
- UIDAI sends a physical letter containing a Secret Code to that address
- Once you receive it, go back to myAadhaar and enter the secret code
- Your address gets updated — fee is Rs. 50
What Your New Address Should Look Like
UIDAI has specific formatting requirements:
- House/Building/Apartment: Flat 302, Skyline Heights
- Street/Road/Lane: MG Road
- Landmark: Near City Mall
- Area/Locality: Koramangala
- Village/Town/City: Bengaluru
- District: Bengaluru Urban
- State: Karnataka
- PIN Code: 560034
Processing Time
| Method | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Standard (with document) | 10-15 working days |
| Head of Family | 7-10 working days |
| Address Validation Letter | 30-45 days (includes postal delivery time) |
