Section-wise Strategy

Listening (Band 7+ = 30+ correct out of 40)

  1. Read questions before audio plays — Use the 30-second preview time
  2. Listen for synonyms — Answers are often paraphrased, not word-for-word
  3. Write answers as you listen — Do not rely on memory
  4. Watch for traps — Speaker may say one answer then correct themselves
  5. Spelling matters — Even in Listening; practice British and American spellings
SectionDifficultyTips
Section 1Easy (conversation)Focus on names, numbers, dates
Section 2Moderate (monologue)Map/diagram labeling common
Section 3Hard (academic discussion)Multiple speakers, complex ideas

Reading (Band 7+ = 30+ correct out of 40)

  1. Skim the passage first (3 minutes) — Get the main idea and paragraph structure
  2. Read questions before detailed reading — Know what to look for
  3. Time management — Spend 20 minutes per passage (3 passages total)
  4. True/False/Not Given — True = matches, False = contradicts, Not Given = no information
  5. Matching headings — Read paragraph first and last sentences

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I prepare for IELTS?

For Band 7+, most test-takers need 4-8 weeks of dedicated preparation. If your English is already strong (comfortable reading English newspapers and speaking daily), 4 weeks may suffice. If English is not used regularly, allow 8-12 weeks.

Is IELTS Academic harder than General Training?

The Reading section is harder in Academic (academic texts vs everyday texts). Writing Task 1 is different (graph description vs letter writing). However, the Speaking and Listening sections are identical. Overall, Academic is considered slightly harder.

Can I retake only one section of IELTS?

Yes, IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to retake any single section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) without retaking the entire test. This is available at select test centers. Check ielts.org for availability.
