Common Mistakes XAT Aspirants Make
- Ignoring Decision Making until the last month — This section needs at least 8-10 weeks of dedicated practice. You cannot wing it.
- Not managing the unanswered question penalty — XAT deducts 0.10 marks for every question left blank beyond 8 in Part 1. Plan to attempt at least 65 out of 75.
- Over-preparing for GK at the expense of Part 1 — GK doesn't count for XLRI. Spend 15 minutes daily on it, not hours.
- Applying CAT strategies blindly — XAT rewards different skills, especially in DM and CR. Treat it as a separate exam.
- Rushing through Decision Making scenarios — Speed without comprehension leads to wrong answers. Read carefully.

Is XAT harder than CAT?
XAT is not harder in terms of Quant difficulty, but the Decision Making section and the overall time management challenge make it a different beast. Many CAT 99 percentilers score below 90 in XAT because they underestimate DM.
Can I prepare for XAT alongside CAT?
Absolutely. Since CAT typically happens in late November and XAT in early January, most serious MBA aspirants prepare for both. After CAT, dedicate 4-5 weeks exclusively to XAT Decision Making and GK.
What XAT score do I need for XLRI BM?
XLRI BM (Business Management) typically requires a 95+ XAT percentile as a minimum cutoff, though the actual call cutoff varies by gender and profile. For HRM, the cutoff is slightly lower.
