Step-by-Step JoSAA Process
Step 1 — Registration
Register on josaa.nic.in using your JEE Main/Advanced application number. Key details needed:
- JEE Main/Advanced roll number
- Date of birth
- Valid email and mobile number
- Password creation
- Category and PwD certificate details (if applicable)
Step 2 — Choice Filling
This is the make-or-break step. You create an ordered list of college + branch combinations, ranked by your preference.
| Choice Filling Facts | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum choices | No upper limit |
| Can you modify choices? | Yes, until locking deadline |
| Auto-lock | System locks last saved order if not manually locked |
| Recommended number of choices | 50–150 depending on rank |
| Can you add new choices after Round 1? | Yes, between rounds |
Choice Filling Strategy by Rank Range
| JEE Advanced Rank | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Under 500 | Top IIT CSE/EE/Mech in top 5 IITs first, then branch preferences in other IITs |
| 500–2,000 | Mix of top IITs (non-CSE) and mid IITs (CSE), consider 5-year programs |
| 2,000–5,000 | Focus on branch priority in mid/new IITs, add top NITs as safety |
| 5,000–10,000 | New IITs + top NITs, consider IIT 5-year integrated programs |
| JEE Main Rank | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Under 5,000 | Top 5 NITs CSE, then ECE/EE in top NITs, add top IIITs |
| 5,000–15,000 | Mid-tier NIT CSE, top NIT ECE/EE, top IIITs |
| 15,000–30,000 | NIT home state quota branches, new IIITs CSE |
| 30,000–50,000 | NIT lower branches, GFTIs, newer IIITs |
| 50,000+ | GFTIs and newer IIITs in remaining branches |
Step 3 — Seat Allotment
JoSAA uses a Deferred Acceptance Algorithm. The system processes all candidates simultaneously and allots the highest preference available based on rank and seat availability.
Step 4 — Responding to Allotment
After each round, you must respond within the deadline:
| Option | What It Means | Seat Status | Upgrade Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Accept this seat permanently | Confirmed | No further upgrades |
| Float | Accept seat, want upgrade in same institute | Confirmed | Only within same institute |
| Slide | Accept seat, want upgrade to any higher preference | Confirmed | Yes, to any higher preference |
| No Action / Withdraw | Reject the seat | Seat released | Removed from process |
Step 5 — Seat Acceptance Fee
| Category | Seat Acceptance Fee | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC | Rs 35,000 (IIT) / Rs 25,000 (NIT) | Yes, with deductions |
| SC / ST / PwD | Rs 15,000 (IIT) / Rs 10,000 (NIT) | Yes, with deductions |
Step 6 — Reporting
You can report to either a Reporting Centre (RC) or directly to the allotted institute. During reporting, your original documents are verified.
Documents Required
| Document | Copies | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| JEE Main Scorecard | 2 | Downloaded from NTA website |
| JEE Advanced Scorecard (if applicable) | 2 | For IIT allotment |
| Class 10 Certificate & Marksheet | 2 | For date of birth |
| Class 12 Certificate & Marksheet | 2 | Original mandatory |
| Category Certificate | 2 | From competent authority, current year |
| EWS Certificate | 2 | Income certificate for current FY |
| PwD Certificate | 2 | From designated medical board |
| Passport-size Photos | 10 | Recent, with white background |
| Aadhar Card | 2 | For identity verification |
| JoSAA Allotment Letter | 2 | Print from josaa.nic.in |
| Seat Acceptance Fee Receipt | 2 | Payment confirmation |
Home State vs Other State Quota in NITs
NITs reserve 50% of seats for home state candidates and 50% for other state candidates. This significantly affects cutoffs.
| NIT Example | CSE Home State Closing Rank | CSE Other State Closing Rank |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | 8,000 | 3,500 |
| NIT Warangal | 9,500 | 5,000 |
| NIT Surathkal | 8,500 | 4,500 |
| MNIT Jaipur | 12,000 | 7,500 |
| NIT Calicut | 14,000 | 8,000 |
CSAB Special Rounds
After JoSAA's 6 rounds, unfilled NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats are allotted through CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) special rounds. Key facts:
| CSAB Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Eligible candidates | JEE Main qualifiers who did not get JoSAA allotment OR want to upgrade |
| Rounds | 2 special rounds + supernumerary round |
| Seats available | Typically 3,000–5,000 across NITs/IIITs/GFTIs |
| Separate registration? | Yes, on csab.nic.in |
| Seat acceptance fee | Same as JoSAA |
Round-by-Round Cutoff Movement
Cutoffs generally decrease from Round 1 to Round 6. Here is a typical example (NIT Trichy CSE, General):
| Round | Opening Rank | Closing Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 1,200 | 3,000 |
| Round 2 | 1,200 | 3,200 |
| Round 3 | 1,200 | 3,350 |
| Round 4 | 1,200 | 3,400 |
| Round 5 | 1,200 | 3,480 |
| Round 6 | 1,200 | 3,500 |
Common Mistakes in JoSAA Counselling
- Filling too few choices — With 113 institutions and dozens of branches each, there are thousands of combinations. Fill at least 50–100 choices.
- Prioritizing college over branch blindly — For engineering, branch matters significantly for career outcomes. CSE at a mid-NIT can be better than Civil at a top NIT for placement purposes.
- Ignoring home state quota — The 50% home state reservation in NITs gives you a massive advantage. Always include your home state NIT with multiple branches.
- Choosing Freeze too early — Unless you have your dream allotment, Slide is always the better option. You cannot re-enter the process once you Freeze.
- Not paying seat acceptance fee on time — The deadline is strict. Late payment means seat cancellation with no recourse.
- Skipping CSAB registration — Even if you have a JoSAA allotment, CSAB can upgrade you. Register for CSAB as a backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I participate in JoSAA if I only qualified JEE Main (not Advanced)?
Yes. JoSAA handles admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs using JEE Main ranks. You will only be excluded from IIT seats, which require JEE Advanced qualification.
What happens if I get upgraded in a later round?
Your previous seat is automatically released, and you are allotted the new (higher preference) seat. You do not need to pay additional fees for the upgrade. Report to the new institute within the deadline.
Can I withdraw after accepting a seat?
Yes, but you will lose a portion of your seat acceptance fee. The refund amount decreases with each round. Withdrawing after the final round may result in complete forfeiture.
Is there any counselling for state government engineering colleges?
Yes. State engineering colleges (other than NITs/IIITs/GFTIs) conduct their own counselling using JEE Main scores or state-level exam scores. These are separate from JoSAA.
What if my category certificate is not ready during counselling?
You can provisionally participate as General category, but you will not get category-specific benefits (lower cutoffs, reserved seats). Get your certificate ready before counselling begins.
