KPSC (Karnataka Public Service Commission) conducts the KAS (Karnataka Administrative Service) examination, also known as the Gazetted Probationers exam, to recruit for Group A and Group B posts in the state government. Karnataka has a rich heritage spanning the Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire, and a vibrant Kannada literary tradition — and KPSC tests all of it. The exam has its own rhythm that is different from both UPSC and other state PSCs. This guide from ExamHub walks you through a practical strategy for KAS 2026.
KPSC KAS 2026 Exam Structure
| Stage | Nature | Marks | Purpose |
| Prelims | Objective (MCQ) | 300 | Screening — determines Mains eligibility |
| Mains | Descriptive | 1000 | Merit-building |
| Interview | Personality Test | 200 | Final ranking |
Final merit = Mains (1000) + Interview (200) = 1200 marks
Prelims Exam Pattern
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative Marking |
| Paper 1 | General Studies | 100 | 150 | 2 hours | 0.25 per wrong |
| Paper 2 | General Studies | 100 | 150 | 2 hours | 0.25 per wrong |
Both papers count toward the cutoff. Paper 1 covers conventional GS topics while Paper 2 focuses on CSAT-type aptitude along with additional GS areas.
Paper 1 — Topic Distribution
| Topic | Expected Questions |
| Indian History & Heritage | 15-18 |
| Karnataka History & Culture | 12-15 |
| Indian & Karnataka Geography | 15-18 |
| Indian Polity & Constitution | 12-15 |
| Economy (India + Karnataka) | 10-12 |
| Science & Technology | 10-12 |
| Current Affairs | 15-18 |
Paper 2 — Topic Distribution

| Comprehension & Communication | 15-18 |
| Logical Reasoning | 15-18 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 15-18 |

The Kannada Language section in Paper 2 is distinctive. Even English-medium candidates need functional Kannada knowledge. Questions test grammar, vocabulary, literary figures, and comprehension in Kannada.
Mains Exam Pattern
| Paper | Subject | Marks |
| GS Paper 1 | History (India + Karnataka), Art & Culture | 250 |
| GS Paper 2 | Geography, Economy, Environment (India + Karnataka) | 250 |
| GS Paper 3 | Polity, Governance, Ethics, Law | 250 |
| GS Paper 4 | Science & Tech, Disaster Management | 250 |
| Kannada | Compulsory language paper | Qualifying |
| English | Compulsory language paper | Qualifying |
All four GS papers count toward merit. Kannada and English are qualifying only (minimum passing marks required).
No optional subject — KAS Mains is entirely GS-based. This levels the playing field but demands thorough preparation across all subjects.
Karnataka-Specific Content Strategy
Karnataka History (Critical Section)
- Kadamba dynasty — First indigenous dynasty, Banavasi as capital, Mayurasharma's story
- Chalukyas of Badami — Pulakeshin II defeating Harsha, Aihole inscription by Ravikirti, cave temples
- Rashtrakutas — Amoghavarsha's literary contributions, Ellora's Kailasa temple patronage
- Chalukyas of Kalyani — Western Chalukya revival, administrative innovations
- Hoysala dynasty — Belur and Halebidu temples (star-shaped plan, intricate sculpture), Vishnuvardhana, Hoysala architecture as a distinct style
- Vijayanagara Empire — Hampi as capital, Krishnadevaraya (arguably the most important figure for KPSC), Tuluva dynasty, administration, trade with Portuguese. This section alone can yield 5-8 questions.
- Hyder Ali & Tipu Sultan — Military innovations, Anglo-Mysore Wars, rocket technology, administrative reforms, death at Srirangapatna
- Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore — Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and IV, Dewan Purnaiah, Mirza Ismail's modernization of Mysore
- Unification of Karnataka — Ekikarana movement, formation of Karnataka state (1956), role of Aluru Venkata Rao
Kannada Literature (Unique to KAS)
This is probably the most distinctive aspect of KAS preparation:
- Pampa — "Adi Kavi" of Kannada, Vikramarjuna Vijaya. First major Kannada literary figure.
- Ranna — Gadayuddha, contemporary of Pampa
- Basavanna — Vachana Sahitya movement, social reform through literature, 12th century
- Akka Mahadevi — Vachana poetess, spiritual and feminist icon
- Kuvempu — Jnanpith Award winner, Sri Ramayana Darshanam, "Rashtrakavi"
- Da Ra Bendre — "Varakavi," Jnanpith Award, Naku Tanti poetry
- Masti Venkatesha Iyengar — Jnanpith Award, short story master
- Shivaram Karanth — Jnanpith Award, Mookajjiya Kanasugalu, Yakshagana reformer
- U.R. Ananthamurthy — Samskara, Jnanpith Award, modern Kannada literature
Knowing these literary figures, their key works, and their contributions is expected — not just names, but the significance of their writings.
Karnataka Geography
- Physiographic regions — Coastal Karnataka (Karavali), Western Ghats (Sahyadri), Malnad region, Northern plateau, Southern plateau
- Rivers — Krishna, Cauvery (and the interstate dispute with TN), Tungabhadra, Sharavathi (Jog Falls), Malaprabha

- Agriculture — Coffee (Coorg is India's coffee capital), sandalwood, silk (Mysore silk), sugarcane, ragi

Preparation Tips
- Karnataka history has more depth than most candidates expect — From Kadamba to Wodeyar, each dynasty has administrative, cultural, and architectural contributions that KPSC tests in detail. Surface-level knowledge is not enough for Mains.
- Kannada literary knowledge is a differentiator — Knowing the Jnanpith laureates from Karnataka (there are eight) and their key works gives you easy marks that many candidates from other state PSC backgrounds would miss.
- Vijayanagara and Hoysala questions are perennial favorites — Hampi, Krishnadevaraya, Belur-Halebidu — these appear in some form almost every year. Master them thoroughly.
- Practice aptitude daily, not in bursts — Paper 2 aptitude is mechanical. Thirty minutes of daily practice builds more speed than weekend cramming sessions.
- Karnataka Economic Survey is essential reading — The state government publishes this annually with data on agriculture, industry, IT sector, and fiscal indicators. It directly feeds into Mains Paper 2.
- For the interview, know your district — KPSC interviews often start with questions about your home district. Know its geography, administration, major industries, and recent developments.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating Kannada literature as a minor topic — In Paper 2 Prelims, Kannada language and literature questions can number 15-20. Ignoring this section is ignoring 10-15% of the marks.
- Using only UPSC material for Karnataka history — UPSC barely touches regional dynasty details that KPSC tests in depth. You need Karnataka-specific history textbooks.
- Ignoring the unification movement — The Ekikarana (unification) movement and formation of Karnataka state is tested regularly. It involves specific leaders, dates, and events that general history books do not cover.
- Weak answer writing for Mains — KAS Mains is entirely descriptive. Candidates who can recall facts but cannot organize 250-word answers under time pressure struggle. Practice writing daily from month 5 onward.
- Neglecting qualifying language papers — Failing the Kannada or English qualifying paper wastes your entire Mains effort. These are not hard, but they need at least a week of focused preparation each.
