Section-wise Strategy
Child Development & Pedagogy (CDP) — 30 Marks
This section is common to both papers and arguably the most important one to master:
- Piaget's Cognitive Development Theory — Understand all four stages thoroughly. Questions on sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages appear every session.
- Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development — Know how scaffolding works and its classroom applications.
- Kohlberg's Moral Development — Pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional levels with examples.
- Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences — All eight intelligences and how they relate to teaching.
- Inclusive Education — Education of children with special needs, learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia), and gifted children.
- NCF 2005 — Assessment reforms, constructivist approach, learning without burden. This document is a gold mine for CTET.
- Gender as a social construct — Questions on gender bias in education and how teachers can address it.
- Assessment types — Formative vs summative, continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE).
Language I (30 Marks)
Language I tests your comprehension and pedagogical understanding of the medium of instruction:
- Unseen passages — Two passages (prose and poetry), with comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary questions
- Language development — Principles of language acquisition, role of listening and speaking
- Challenges in language teaching — Multilingual classrooms, teaching language in diverse settings
- Remedial teaching — Strategies for language learning difficulties
Language II (30 Marks)
Language II focuses on language elements and comprehension at a slightly easier level than Language I. The pedagogy questions test your understanding of teaching a second language.
Mathematics (Paper 1: 30 Marks, Paper 2: 30 Marks within 60)
For Paper 1 (primary level):
- Number system — Place value, four operations, fractions, decimals
- Geometry — Shapes, spatial understanding
- Measurement — Length, weight, volume, time, money
- Data handling — Simple tables, pictographs
- Pedagogy — Nature of mathematics, methods of teaching, error analysis
For Paper 2 (upper primary):
- Algebra — Algebraic expressions, linear equations, exponents
- Geometry — Triangles, circles, constructions, coordinate geometry basics

Preparation Tips
- NCERT is everything — For content questions (Math, EVS, Science, Social Studies), NCERT textbooks of the relevant classes are sufficient. Don't buy expensive coaching material.
- CDP needs understanding, not memorization — Read about Piaget, Vygotsky, and others from the original NCERT Psychology textbooks. Understand the experiments and examples. Rote learning won't help when questions test application.
- Pedagogy is 50% of the marks — Every section has a pedagogy component. NCF 2005 is the foundational document for all pedagogy questions. Download it from ncf.ncert.org.
- Previous year papers reveal the pattern — CTET repeats question styles. After solving 5-6 previous papers, you will start predicting question types.
- Time management — 150 questions in 150 minutes means exactly 1 minute per question. CDP and language passages take longer; compensate with faster math and factual questions.
- Attempt all questions — No negative marking means leaving a question blank is always worse than guessing.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Focusing only on content, ignoring pedagogy — Candidates who know the math but can't answer "How would you teach fractions to a struggling student?" lose easy marks.
- Not reading NCF 2005 — At least a third of pedagogy questions can be traced back to this document.
- Skipping Language II preparation — Many candidates assume Language II is easy. The pedagogy questions in Language II can be tricky.
- Over-preparing content beyond NCERT level — CTET tests at NCERT level, not competitive exam level. Class 6-8 NCERT is the ceiling for Paper 2.
- Ignoring inclusive education topics — Questions on learning disabilities, special needs, and gifted children appear in every session without fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Yes, CBSE allows candidates to appear for both papers in the same session. Paper 1 is held in one shift and Paper 2 in another. Clearing both gives you eligibility to teach Classes 1-5 and Classes 6-8.
Is CTET enough to get a teaching job?
CTET is an eligibility certificate, not a recruitment exam. After clearing CTET, you need to apply separately for teaching positions in KVS, NVS, DSSSB, or other bodies that accept CTET scores. These have their own selection process.
How many times can I attempt CTET?
There is no limit on the number of attempts. You can appear until you qualify. The certificate, once obtained, is valid for lifetime.
