How to Calculate Square Footage — Rooms, Land, Irregular Shapes
Learn how to calculate square footage for rooms, land plots, and irregular shapes — with formulas, worked examples, and conversion to square meters.
Whether you're buying flooring, painting walls, renting an apartment, or purchasing land, square footage is the measurement you need. It tells you the area of a space in square feet — and knowing how to calculate it saves you from overpaying for materials or misunderstanding property sizes.
Here's how to calculate square footage for every common scenario. Use the CalcHub area calculator for instant results.
Basic Formula: Rectangular Spaces
Most rooms and plots are rectangular:
Square Footage = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Example: A Bedroom
- Length: 14 feet
- Width: 12 feet
- Square footage: 14 × 12 = 168 sq ft
Calculating Square Footage for Common Shapes
Rectangle / Square
Area = Length × Width
Triangle
Area = (Base × Height) / 2
Circle
Area = π × radius²
= 3.14159 × r²
Trapezoid
Area = ((Base1 + Base2) / 2) × Height
Worked Example: Entire House
Calculate the total square footage by measuring each room individually and adding them together.
| Room | Length (ft) | Width (ft) | Square Footage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living Room | 18 | 15 | 270 |
| Master Bedroom | 14 | 12 | 168 |
| Bedroom 2 | 12 | 10 | 120 |
| Kitchen | 12 | 10 | 120 |
| Bathroom 1 | 8 | 6 | 48 |
| Bathroom 2 | 6 | 5 | 30 |
| Hallway | 15 | 4 | 60 |
Irregular Shapes: The Divide-and-Add Method
Most irregular rooms can be broken into rectangles and triangles:
- Sketch the floor plan on paper
- Divide it into rectangles (and triangles if needed)
- Calculate each section separately
- Add all sections together
Example: L-Shaped Room
An L-shaped room that is 20ft × 15ft with a 10ft × 8ft section cut out:
Full rectangle: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
Cutout: 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft
L-shaped room: 300 - 80 = 220 sq ft
Alternatively, divide the L into two rectangles and add them.
Converting Between Units
| From | To | Multiply By |
|---|---|---|
| Square feet | Square meters | 0.0929 |
| Square meters | Square feet | 10.764 |
| Square feet | Square yards | 0.1111 |
| Acres | Square feet | 43,560 |
| Square feet | Acres | 0.0000229 |
Example:
A 1,200 sq ft apartment in square meters: 1,200 × 0.0929 = 111.48 sq mMeasuring Tips for Accurate Results
1. Measure at floor level. Walls aren't always perfectly vertical. Measure along the floor where the floor meets the wall for the most accurate reading. 2. Measure twice. The old carpenter's rule exists for a reason. Measure each dimension twice and use the average if they differ slightly. 3. Round to the nearest inch. For room measurements, rounding to the nearest inch is sufficient. For material purchases, round up to ensure you buy enough. 4. Account for closets and alcoves. Measure each alcove or closet separately and add to the room area. Built-in closets are typically included in room square footage but not always in "living area."Practical Applications
Flooring: Add 10% to your calculated square footage for waste/cuts. If your room is 168 sq ft, buy 185 sq ft of flooring. Paint: One gallon covers approximately 350-400 sq ft. Calculate wall area (not floor area) — multiply room perimeter by ceiling height, then subtract window and door areas. Rent comparison: Divide rent by square footage to get price per sq ft. A Rs 25,000 apartment at 800 sq ft costs Rs 31.25/sq ft; a Rs 30,000 apartment at 1,100 sq ft costs Rs 27.27/sq ft — the bigger apartment is better value.What's the difference between carpet area and built-up area?
Carpet area is the usable floor space inside the walls. Built-up area includes wall thickness. Super built-up area (used by many Indian builders) includes your share of common areas like lobbies and stairs. Carpet area is typically 60-70% of super built-up area.
How do I measure a room with angled walls?
Break the room into rectangular and triangular sections. Measure the straight edges of each section. Calculate each section's area and add them together. For complex angles, the CalcHub area calculator with its triangle and trapezoid options can help.
Is square footage the same worldwide?
No. Most of the world uses square meters. The US, UK (sometimes), and India (in real estate) commonly use square feet. Always check which unit is being used when comparing property sizes internationally.
