The Salary Hike Formula
Hike % = (New Salary − Old Salary) / Old Salary × 100| Old CTC | New CTC | Absolute Increase | Hike % |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹6,00,000 | ₹6,60,000 | ₹60,000 | 10% |
| ₹8,00,000 | ₹9,20,000 | ₹1,20,000 | 15% |
| ₹10,00,000 | ₹12,00,000 | ₹2,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹12,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹3,00,000 | 25% |
| ₹15,00,000 | ₹19,50,000 | ₹4,50,000 | 30% |
| ₹20,00,000 | ₹30,00,000 | ₹10,00,000 | 50% |
Reverse: Finding New Salary from Hike %
New Salary = Old Salary × (1 + Hike%/100)| Old CTC | Hike % | New CTC |
|---|---|---|
| ₹6,00,000 | 8% | ₹6,48,000 |
| ₹8,00,000 | 10% | ₹8,80,000 |
| ₹10,00,000 | 15% | ₹11,50,000 |
| ₹12,00,000 | 20% | ₹14,40,000 |
| ₹15,00,000 | 25% | ₹18,75,000 |
| ₹20,00,000 | 30% | ₹26,00,000 |

CTC Hike vs In-Hand Hike
This is the most important distinction most people miss:
Example: 15% CTC hike from ₹10 LPA to ₹11.5 LPA| Component | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| CTC | ₹10,00,000 | ₹11,50,000 | +₹1,50,000 |
| Employer EPF | ₹72,000 | ₹82,800 | +₹10,800 (not in hand) |
| Gratuity | ₹28,800 | ₹33,120 | +₹4,320 (not in hand) |
| Insurance | ₹20,000 | ₹20,000 | ₹0 |
| Gross salary | ₹8,79,200 | ₹10,14,080 | +₹1,34,880 |
| Employee EPF | −₹72,000 | −₹82,800 | −₹10,800 |
| Income tax (approx) | −₹75,000 | −₹1,05,000 | −₹30,000 |
| In-hand (annual) | ₹7,32,200 | ₹8,26,280 | +₹94,080 |
| In-hand (monthly) | ₹61,017 | ₹68,857 | +₹7,840 |
Real vs Inflation-Adjusted Hike
| Your Hike | Inflation (6%) | Real Hike | Purchasing Power Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 6% | −1% | You're poorer |
| 8% | 6% | 2% | Barely growing |
| 10% | 6% | 4% | Decent growth |
| 15% | 6% | 9% | Strong growth |
| 25% | 6% | 19% | Significant improvement |
How to Negotiate a Better Hike
- Know your market rate. Check Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and AmbitionBox for your role, experience, and location.
- Quantify your impact. "I managed the project" is weak. "I delivered the project 2 weeks early, saving ₹8 lakh in contractor costs" is strong.
- Have an external offer. Nothing moves the needle like a competing offer. But only use this if you're genuinely willing to leave.
- Negotiate timing, not just amount. If they can't do 20% now, ask for a 12% now + review in 6 months.
- Consider total compensation. ESOPs, bonuses, flexible benefits, and role growth can be worth more than a few percentage points of CTC.
Should I calculate hike on CTC or basic salary?
Always calculate on CTC — that's the total cost your employer bears. Basic salary hikes can be misleading because companies can restructure components (reduce HRA, increase basic) without changing CTC.
How much hike should I expect when switching jobs?
The general rule in India is 20–40% for a lateral move. Below 20% usually isn't worth the risk and disruption of switching. Above 40% is exceptional and usually involves a promotion or hot skill.
Is a 10% annual hike good?
In India with 5–6% inflation, a 10% hike gives you ~4–5% real salary growth. It's decent for a standard performer. High performers should target 12–15%+, and if consistently getting only 8–10%, it may be time to explore external opportunities.
