Appraisal season brings one question: "Is this a good hike?" Before you can answer that, you need to know how to calculate it correctly — and most people confuse CTC hike with in-hand hike, which are very different numbers.

Use the CalcHub Percentage Calculator for instant calculations.

The Salary Hike Formula

Hike % = (New Salary − Old Salary) / Old Salary × 100
Old CTCNew CTCAbsolute IncreaseHike %
₹6,00,000₹6,60,000₹60,00010%
₹8,00,000₹9,20,000₹1,20,00015%
₹10,00,000₹12,00,000₹2,00,00020%
₹12,00,000₹15,00,000₹3,00,00025%
₹15,00,000₹19,50,000₹4,50,00030%
₹20,00,000₹30,00,000₹10,00,00050%

Reverse: Finding New Salary from Hike %

New Salary = Old Salary × (1 + Hike%/100)
Old CTCHike %New CTC
₹6,00,0008%₹6,48,000
₹8,00,00010%₹8,80,000
₹10,00,00015%₹11,50,000
₹12,00,00020%₹14,40,000
₹15,00,00025%₹18,75,000
₹20,00,00030%₹26,00,000

CTC Hike vs In-Hand Hike

This is the most important distinction most people miss:

Example: 15% CTC hike from ₹10 LPA to ₹11.5 LPA
ComponentBeforeAfterChange
CTC₹10,00,000₹11,50,000+₹1,50,000
Employer EPF₹72,000₹82,800+₹10,800 (not in hand)
Gratuity₹28,800₹33,120+₹4,320 (not in hand)
Insurance₹20,000₹20,000₹0
Gross salary₹8,79,200₹10,14,080+₹1,34,880
Employee EPF−₹72,000−₹82,800−₹10,800
Income tax (approx)−₹75,000−₹1,05,000−₹30,000
In-hand (annual)₹7,32,200₹8,26,280+₹94,080
In-hand (monthly)₹61,017₹68,857+₹7,840
Your CTC went up ₹1.5 lakh (15%), but your in-hand went up only ₹94,080 (12.8%). The rest went to EPF, gratuity, and higher tax. Rule of thumb: Your in-hand hike percentage is typically 60–80% of your CTC hike percentage at higher salary levels, because of progressive taxation.

Real vs Inflation-Adjusted Hike

Your HikeInflation (6%)Real HikePurchasing Power Change
5%6%−1%You're poorer
8%6%2%Barely growing
10%6%4%Decent growth
15%6%9%Strong growth
25%6%19%Significant improvement
A 5% hike with 6% inflation means your purchasing power actually decreased. Any hike below inflation is effectively a pay cut.

How to Negotiate a Better Hike

  1. Know your market rate. Check Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and AmbitionBox for your role, experience, and location.
  2. Quantify your impact. "I managed the project" is weak. "I delivered the project 2 weeks early, saving ₹8 lakh in contractor costs" is strong.
  3. Have an external offer. Nothing moves the needle like a competing offer. But only use this if you're genuinely willing to leave.
  4. Negotiate timing, not just amount. If they can't do 20% now, ask for a 12% now + review in 6 months.
  5. Consider total compensation. ESOPs, bonuses, flexible benefits, and role growth can be worth more than a few percentage points of CTC.

Should I calculate hike on CTC or basic salary?

Always calculate on CTC — that's the total cost your employer bears. Basic salary hikes can be misleading because companies can restructure components (reduce HRA, increase basic) without changing CTC.

How much hike should I expect when switching jobs?

The general rule in India is 20–40% for a lateral move. Below 20% usually isn't worth the risk and disruption of switching. Above 40% is exceptional and usually involves a promotion or hot skill.

Is a 10% annual hike good?

In India with 5–6% inflation, a 10% hike gives you ~4–5% real salary growth. It's decent for a standard performer. High performers should target 12–15%+, and if consistently getting only 8–10%, it may be time to explore external opportunities.
