Why are there two different gallons?
The US gallon derives from the old English wine gallon (231 cubic inches). The UK imperial gallon was standardized later in 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water, which works out to 277.42 cubic inches — about 20% more than the US gallon.
How many liters in a US gallon?
Exactly 3.785411784 liters. For practical purposes, 3.785 L or roughly 3.8 L.
What's better for fuel economy — mpg or L/100km?
They're inverses of each other, which trips people up. Better fuel economy = higher mpg but lower L/100km. A car getting 35 mpg uses about 6.7 L/100km. A car getting 50 mpg uses about 4.7 L/100km.
