Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion is the third most searched unit conversion globally — used for weather comparisons, cooking temperatures, travel, and understanding international news. Most of the world uses Celsius; the US uses Fahrenheit.

Formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 Reverse: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

The CalcHub Temperature Converter handles all temperature conversions instantly.

Key anchors to memorize:
  • 0°C = 32°F (water freezes)
  • 37°C = 98.6°F (body temperature)
  • 100°C = 212°F (water boils)
  • −40°C = −40°F (they meet!)

Mental Math Shortcut

Quick C to F: Double the Celsius, then add 30.

The shortcut is exact at 10°C and increasingly overestimates at higher temperatures. For weather and general use, it's close enough. More precise shortcut: Multiply by 2, subtract 10% of that, add 32. 25°C → 25×2 = 50, −10% = 45, +32 = 77°F (exact!)

Why Two Temperature Scales Exist

Fahrenheit (1724): Daniel Fahrenheit set 0° at the coldest temperature he could achieve (ice + salt mixture) and 96° at human body temperature (later refined to 98.6°). Water freezes at 32° and boils at 212°. Celsius (1742): Anders Celsius designed a cleaner scale: 0° = water freezing, 100° = water boiling. Most of the world adopted it because the round numbers make scientific calculation simpler.

Neither is inherently better. Fahrenheit has finer gradations for weather (each degree is smaller), while Celsius aligns with the metric system and science.

What temperature is the same in both Celsius and Fahrenheit?

−40°. It's the only point where both scales intersect: (−40 × 9/5) + 32 = −40. This quirk comes from the different zero points and scale factors.

Why does the US still use Fahrenheit?

Cultural inertia and the cost of switching. The US attempted metrication in the 1970s but it never fully stuck for everyday use. Weather, cooking, and body temperature remain in Fahrenheit, while science and medicine use Celsius. It's one of the last holdouts alongside Liberia and Myanmar.

Is there a temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit are close?

Around 16°C ≈ 61°F (off by only 1 unit in magnitude). At human body temperature, 37°C ≈ 98.6°F. The scales diverge more at extremes.
