Temperature conversion between Celsius and Fahrenheit comes up constantly — checking weather forecasts while traveling, adjusting oven temperatures for recipes from another country, or interpreting fever readings. The CalcHub Temperature Converter does it instantly, but the formula is simple enough to memorize.

The Formula

F = (C x 9/5) + 32

Or equivalently: F = (C x 1.8) + 32

To go the other way: C = (F - 32) x 5/9

Worked Example 1 — Weather

The forecast says 28 degrees C. What is that in Fahrenheit?

28 x 1.8 = 50.4, plus 32 = 82.4 degrees F — a warm summer day.

Worked Example 2 — Oven Temperature

A European recipe says to preheat to 180 degrees C.

180 x 1.8 = 324, plus 32 = 356 degrees F. Round to 350 F, the standard US oven setting.

The Quick Mental Math Trick

Double the Celsius value, subtract 10%, and add 32.

Example: 25 degrees C. Double = 50. Minus 10% (5) = 45. Plus 32 = 77 degrees F. The exact answer is 77, so this trick is remarkably accurate.

Practical Use Cases

Travel: You land in the US and the weather app says 95 F. Subtract 32 (63), multiply by 5/9 = 35 C. That is dangerously hot — stay hydrated. Cooking: American recipes use Fahrenheit exclusively. Knowing that 350 F = 177 C, 375 F = 190 C, and 400 F = 204 C covers most baking scenarios. Medical: A fever above 100.4 F (38 C) is clinically significant. At 103 F (39.4 C), seek medical attention.

Why does the US still use Fahrenheit?

Habit and infrastructure. The Fahrenheit scale was standard when US weather infrastructure was built. Converting every road sign, thermostat, and weather system has an enormous cost with limited practical benefit.

What temperature is the same in both scales?

Minus 40. At -40, Celsius and Fahrenheit are identical. This is the only point where the two scales intersect.

Which scale is more precise for everyday use?

Fahrenheit, technically. One degree Fahrenheit is a smaller increment (0.56 C), giving finer resolution without decimals. But both work perfectly well in practice.

For the science behind temperature scales, the ExamHub Blog covers thermodynamics fundamentals.
