Apartment sizes are quoted in square feet in India but square meters in most of Europe. A 1,000 sq ft apartment is about 93 square meters. When comparing properties internationally, always convert to a common unit. Land prices get confusing fast:

• Maharashtra uses guntha (1 guntha = 1,089 sq ft)
• North India uses bigha (size varies by state — this is genuinely maddening)
• Government records often use hectares or acres

Carpet area vs built-up area vs super built-up area:

• Carpet area = actual usable floor space
• Built-up area = carpet + walls + balcony (typically 10-15% more)
• Super built-up area = built-up + share of common areas (typically 25-35% more than carpet)

A "1,200 sq ft" apartment with super built-up pricing might have only 850 sq ft of carpet area. Always ask which measurement is being used.

Flooring and Home Projects

To calculate flooring needs:

1. Measure room length and width in feet


2. Multiply for area: 12 ft × 14 ft = 168 sq ft


3. Add 10% for waste/cuts: 168 × 1.10 = 185 sq ft needed


4. Convert to boxes: if tiles come in 2 sq ft each, you need 93 tiles

For irregularly shaped rooms, break them into rectangles, calculate each, and add them up.

Agriculture

Agricultural land is typically measured in acres or hectares:

• 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft (roughly the size of a football field minus the end zones)


• 1 hectare = 2.471 acres = 10,000 square meters

Indian agricultural holdings are often described in "bigha" but the size of a bigha varies wildly — from 1,500 sq ft in some states to 27,000 sq ft in others. Always clarify the local definition.

How many square feet is a "standard" room?
