Partial Withdrawal Rules
After the girl turns 18, partial withdrawal is allowed for:
- Higher education: Up to 50% of the balance at the end of the preceding year
- Marriage: After turning 18, the account can be closed
This means the SSY fund can directly finance college education and still have the remainder growing for post-graduation or marriage expenses.
How to Open an SSY Account
- Visit any post office or authorized bank (SBI, ICICI, Axis, HDFC, PNB, etc.)
- Bring: girl child's birth certificate, parent's ID proof, address proof, photographs
- Minimum opening deposit: ₹250
- Account is opened in the girl child's name with parent/guardian as operator
How to Use the Calculator
- Open the CalcHub SSY Calculator
- Enter the girl child's current age
- Enter annual deposit amount (₹250 to ₹1,50,000)
- Interest rate defaults to current 8.2%
- See: maturity amount, total interest earned, year-by-year breakdown
What if I can't deposit the minimum ₹250 in a year?
The account becomes inactive. To reactivate, deposit the minimum ₹250 for each missed year plus a ₹50 penalty per year. Interest continues on the existing balance even if the account is defaulted.
Can I open SSY for my adopted daughter?
Yes. Legally adopted daughters are eligible. You need the adoption certificate along with standard documents.
Should I choose SSY or PPF for my daughter?
SSY wins on returns (8.2% vs 7.1%) and is purpose-built for a girl child's future. The only advantage PPF has is a shorter lock-in (15 years vs 21). If your daughter is under 10, SSY is the better choice for the portion you want in guaranteed instruments.
What happens if the girl gets married before 21?
The account can be prematurely closed after the girl turns 18. The accumulated balance with interest is paid out. No penalty for marriage-related premature closure.
