Practical Projects

Flooring

1. Measure each room: length × width
2. Add all rooms together
3. Add 10% for waste (cuts, mistakes, future repairs)

Example: Living room (200 sq ft) + Bedroom 1 (150 sq ft) + Bedroom 2 (120 sq ft) = 470 sq ft With 10% waste: 470 × 1.10 = 517 sq ft of flooring needed Flooring material per box:

Painting

Wall area = Perimeter × Height − (Windows + Doors)

A 12×14 ft room with 10 ft ceilings:

• Perimeter = 2×(12+14) = 52 ft


• Wall area = 52 × 10 = 520 sq ft


• Minus 2 windows (15 sq ft each) and 1 door (21 sq ft) = 520 − 51 = 469 sq ft

Paint coverage: ~350 sq ft per gallon (1 coat). For 2 coats: 469 × 2 / 350 = 2.7 gallons → buy 3 gallons

Landscaping / Lawn

Irregular yard? Break it into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, and add:

• Rectangular section: 30 × 20 = 600 sq ft
• Triangular corner: ½ × 10 × 8 = 40 sq ft
• Total lawn: 640 sq ft

Sod coverage: 640 sq ft ÷ 9 = ~71 sq ft → about 71 pieces of sod (each typically 1 sq ft) or 71 sq ft of seed coverage needed.

Important: Verify whether the price is quoted per carpet area or super built-up area. Super built-up includes common areas and is 25–35% more than carpet area.

Common trap: 1 foot = 0.3048 meters, but 1 square foot ≠ 0.3048 square meters. You must square the conversion factor: 0.3048² = 0.0929.

How to Measure a Room

1. Use a tape measure — measure wall to wall at floor level
2. Measure in feet and inches — convert inches to decimals (6 inches = 0.5 feet)
3. Measure at the widest points if walls aren't perfectly straight
4. For L-shaped rooms: divide into two rectangles, measure each, add together
5. For rooms with alcoves: measure the main rectangle, then add the alcove area

What's the difference between square feet and running feet?

Square feet measures area (2D). Running feet (or linear feet) measures length (1D). If you need 10 running feet of countertop that's 2 feet deep, that's 20 square feet of surface area.

How do I calculate square footage of an odd-shaped room?

Break it into basic shapes (rectangles, triangles). Calculate each separately and add them. For curved walls, approximate with triangles or use the circle formula for semicircular sections.

Is there a quick way to estimate square footage?

For rooms: count floor tiles (standard 1×1 ft tiles = 1 sq ft each) or pace it out (1 adult step ≈ 2.5 feet). For rough estimates: length in steps × width in steps × 6.25.
