Splitting a bill sounds simple until someone ordered three cocktails and someone else had water. Or the group has different tax situations. Or half the table wants to split tip on the pre-tax total and the other half on the full amount.

CalcHub's split bill calculator handles all of these cases — equal splits, custom amounts per person, and tip/tax calculations. Here's how the math works if you want to do it manually too.

Equal Split

The baseline case: everyone splits equally.

each person pays = (subtotal + tax + tip) ÷ number of people
Example: 4 people, ₹2,400 subtotal, 18% GST, 10% tip:
  • Tax: 2,400 × 0.18 = ₹432
  • Total before tip: ₹2,832
  • Tip: 2,832 × 0.10 = ₹283.20
  • Grand total: ₹3,115.20
  • Per person: ₹3,115.20 ÷ 4 = ₹778.80

Tip Percentage Quick Reference

₹500₹50₹75₹90₹100
₹1,000₹100₹150₹180₹200
₹1,500₹150₹225₹270₹300
₹2,000₹200₹300₹360₹400
₹3,000₹300₹450₹540₹600
₹5,000₹500₹750₹900₹1,000

Uneven Splits — Who Ordered What

When people ordered different amounts, calculate each person's share of tax and tip proportionally.

  1. Total each person's food/drinks subtotal
  2. Calculate their percentage of the group total
  3. Apply that percentage to the shared tax and tip
Example: 3 people. Arjun: ₹600, Priya: ₹900, Rohan: ₹1,500. Total: ₹3,000.
  • Tax (18%): ₹540. Tip (10%): ₹300. Grand total: ₹3,840.
  • Arjun's share: 600/3000 = 20% → ₹3,840 × 0.20 = ₹768
  • Priya's share: 900/3000 = 30% → ₹3,840 × 0.30 = ₹1,152
  • Rohan's share: 1500/3000 = 50% → ₹3,840 × 0.50 = ₹1,920

Group Trips & Shared Expenses

For multi-day trips, the who-owes-whom tracking gets complicated. The efficient way:

  1. List every expense and who paid
  2. Calculate total group spend and divide by number of people → fair share per person
  3. For each person: (what they paid) − (fair share) = their net balance
  4. Positive balance = they're owed money. Negative = they owe money.
  5. Minimize transactions by having the person who owes the most pay the person who's owed the most first.
Example (3 people, equal shares):
PersonPaidFair Share (₹)Net
Ananya₹2,000₹1,500+₹500 (owed)
Karan₹1,200₹1,500−₹300 (owes)
Siya₹1,300₹1,500−₹200 (owes)
Settlement: Karan pays Ananya ₹300, Siya pays Ananya ₹200. Done in 2 transactions.

Should tip be calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Traditionally, tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice, most people tip on whatever total is shown on the bill. Either way, the difference is small (a few percent of the tax amount).

What's the easiest way to split a bill at a restaurant without an app?

Round the bill up to a convenient number, calculate 15–20% of that for tip, then divide the total by the number of people. Rounding errors are the group's donation to the restaurant.

How do I handle someone who doesn't drink splitting alcohol costs?

Have non-drinkers calculate their food-only total separately, then split the alcohol costs among the drinkers only. Add the two back together for each person's total.
