Screen Size Comparison Calculator — Compare TV, Monitor & Phone Sizes

Compare screen sizes visually. Calculate actual dimensions from diagonal measurement, find pixel density (PPI), and understand why screen size isn't just about inches.

A 55-inch TV is not "just a bit bigger" than a 43-inch TV — it's 64% more screen area. Screen sizes are measured diagonally, which makes direct comparison unintuitive. The CalcHub Screen Size Calculator shows actual width, height, area, and side-by-side comparisons.

TV Screen Dimensions (16:9)

DiagonalWidthHeightArea (sq in)Area vs 32"
32"27.9" × 15.7"438 sq in1.0×
40"34.9" × 19.6"684 sq in1.56×
43"37.5" × 21.1"791 sq in1.81×
50"43.6" × 24.5"1,068 sq in2.44×
55"47.9" × 26.9"1,289 sq in2.94×
65"56.7" × 31.9"1,809 sq in4.13×
75"65.4" × 36.8"2,407 sq in5.49×
85"74.1" × 41.7"3,090 sq in7.05×
A 65" TV has 4× the screen area of a 32" TV — not just twice as big as the diagonal number suggests.

Optimal Viewing Distance

Area Comparison — Why Diagonals Are Misleading

Going from 50" to 55" feels like "just 5 inches bigger" but:

  • 50" area: 1,068 sq in

  • 55" area: 1,289 sq in

  • That's 21% more screen — not 10%

The area scales with the square of the diagonal, which is why upgrading from 55" to 75" is a massive visual difference (87% more area).

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Open the CalcHub Screen Size Calculator
  2. Enter diagonal size (inches) and aspect ratio (16:9, 21:9, etc.)
  3. Optionally enter resolution for PPI calculation
  4. See: width, height, area, PPI, and comparison with other sizes

Is a 43" TV good enough for a living room?

For a living room where you sit 8–10 feet away, 43" works but 55" is ideal for 4K content. At 10 feet, a 43" TV subtends a small viewing angle — you won't appreciate 4K resolution. Most people who upgrade from 43" to 55" wish they'd done it sooner.

Does higher resolution mean better picture?

Not by itself. PPI matters more than raw resolution. A 1080p 24" monitor (92 PPI) looks sharper than a 1080p 32" monitor (69 PPI) because the same pixels are packed into less space. Resolution must be matched to screen size.

What's the difference between screen size and viewable area?

Advertised screen size is the diagonal measurement of the panel. Viewable area excludes bezels (the frame around the screen). Modern TVs have thin bezels so the difference is minimal, but for monitors, a 27" with thick bezels might have less viewable area than a 27" with thin bezels.
