Roofing Calculator: How Many Shingles Do You Need?
Calculate roofing material quantity in squares for asphalt shingles, metal, and tile. Includes pitch factor, waste allowance, and underlayment estimation for any roof type.
Roofing is priced and sold in "squares" — one square covers 100 square feet of roof surface. But the roof surface area is always larger than the footprint of your house because of pitch (slope), overhangs, and dormers. Getting the material count right is critical: roofing projects are time-sensitive and you don't want to stop mid-installation waiting for a delivery.
The CalcHub Roofing Calculator calculates total roof area in squares, accounting for pitch, waste, and common roof configurations.
The Pitch Factor
Pitch is expressed as rise-over-run: a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The steeper the pitch, the more roof surface compared to the floor footprint.
Roof Area = Floor Footprint × Pitch Factor| Pitch | Pitch Factor | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2/12 | 1.02 | Nearly flat |
| 4/12 | 1.05 | Low slope |
| 5/12 | 1.08 | Common residential |
| 6/12 | 1.12 | Moderate |
| 7/12 | 1.16 | Moderate-steep |
| 8/12 | 1.20 | Steep |
| 10/12 | 1.30 | Very steep |
| 12/12 | 1.41 | 45° — very steep |
Waste Factor for Roofing
| Roof Complexity | Waste Addition |
|---|---|
| Simple gable (2 planes) | 5–8% |
| Hip roof | 7–10% |
| Multiple valleys and dormers | 10–15% |
| Complex custom roof | 15–20% |
How Many Bundles Per Square?
Most standard 3-tab and architectural (dimensional) asphalt shingles come 3 bundles per square. Each bundle covers approximately 33 sqft. Heavier architectural and premium shingles may be 4–5 bundles per square — check the product specs.
For 22 squares at 3 bundles/square: 66 bundles.
Underlayment Calculation
Roofing underlayment is required under shingles. Standard felt or synthetic underlayment rolls cover:
- 15 lb felt: 4 squares per roll (400 sqft)
- 30 lb felt: 2 squares per roll (200 sqft)
- Synthetic underlayment: 10 squares per roll (1,000 sqft) — most popular now
For 22 squares: 3 rolls of synthetic underlayment or 6 rolls of 30 lb felt.
Full Material List for a Simple Gable Roof
Roof footprint: 2,000 sqft | Pitch: 6/12 | Gable roof
| Material | Calculation | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Shingles | 2,240 sqft ÷ 100 × 1.08 = 24.2 squares | 73 bundles |
| Synthetic underlayment | 24.2 ÷ 10 = 2.4 rolls | 3 rolls |
| Ice & water shield (eaves) | 2 ft depth × perimeter | ~12 sqft/LF |
| Ridge cap shingles | Ridge length (linear ft) | ~1 bundle per 30 LF |
| Roofing nails | Per sq manufacturer spec | ~2–3 lbs per square |
Signs You Need to Recalculate for a Replacement
When replacing an existing roof, the actual square count might differ from original estimates if:
- Decking repairs add area
- Additional layers need tear-off (most codes allow 2 layers max; third layer needs full tear-off)
- Ventilation upgrades require cutting additional openings
How do I measure my own roof safely?
You can measure the roof from the ground and attic rather than walking the roof. Measure the house footprint including overhangs, then apply the pitch factor. Use the pitch gauge app on a smartphone for an accurate pitch reading from inside the attic or along the rake edge.
Do metal roofs use the same calculation?
Same area calculation, different units. Metal roofing is sold by the panel (linear feet in a given width) or by the square. Calculate your area in squares, then convert based on panel dimensions and coverage.
How long do roofs last?
3-tab asphalt: 15–20 years. Architectural/dimensional: 25–30 years. Metal: 40–70 years. Tile: 50+ years. Factor replacement frequency into long-term cost comparisons.
