Packing List Calculator — What to Pack Based on Trip Type and Duration
Generate a customized packing list based on trip length, destination climate, and trip type. Estimates clothing quantities and total bag weight before you start packing.
Most people either drastically overpack (bringing 10 outfits for a 5-day trip and struggling with a 50-pound suitcase) or forget something obvious (charging cables, adapters, prescription medication). A systematic packing list removes both failure modes. The packing list calculator on CalcHub generates a starting list based on your trip type, duration, and destination climate — then estimates your packed bag weight so you don't hit the scale surprise at the airport.
Clothing Quantities by Trip Length
The biggest packing mistake is treating a 7-day trip like a 14-day trip. Most things can be worn or re-used:
| Item | 2–3 days | 4–7 days | 8–14 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirts / tops | 2–3 | 4–5 | 5–7 |
| Pants / shorts | 1–2 | 2–3 | 3–4 |
| Underwear | 3 | 5–7 | 7–10 |
| Socks | 3 pairs | 5–6 pairs | 7–8 pairs |
| Outerwear | 1 layer | 1–2 layers | 1–2 layers |
| Shoes | 2 pairs | 2–3 pairs | 2–3 pairs |
Packing Lists by Trip Type
Beach/Tropical: Swimsuits (2–3), light cover-ups, sandals, sunscreen, reef-safe bug repellent, hat, sunglasses, waterproof bag, light rain layer (tropical downpours are brief but heavy). Cold Weather / Winter: Base layers, mid-layer, waterproof outer layer, warm hat, gloves, merino wool socks (fewer pairs needed — wool manages odor well), boot liners, hand warmers. Business Travel: Wrinkle-resistant dress clothes (packing cubes or dry-cleaning bags help), dress shoes (worn on the plane to save bag space), portable garment steamer or steamer strips. Backpacking / Outdoor: Quick-dry fabrics only, merino base layers (odor-resistant), 2–3 clothing layers for temperature management, water purification, first aid kit, maps.Estimating Packed Weight
Typical clothing weights to plan against:
| Item | Approximate Weight |
|---|---|
| T-shirt | 0.3–0.5 lbs |
| Jeans | 1.5–2 lbs |
| Sneakers | 1.5–2.5 lbs |
| Dress shoes | 2–3 lbs |
| Full toiletry kit | 2–4 lbs |
| Laptop + charger | 4–7 lbs |
| Empty rolling suitcase (medium) | 8–11 lbs |
What's the most universally forgotten packing item?
Chargers and adapters come up most often. A universal travel adapter (Type A/B/C/G/I in one plug) costs $15–25 and eliminates the "wrong outlet" problem in most of the world. After that: a power bank, a small first aid kit, and photocopies or digital backups of important documents (passport, insurance card, visa).
Should I pack carry-on only?
For trips under a week with no formal wear requirements, carry-on only is almost always possible and dramatically improves the travel experience — no checked bag fees, no waiting at baggage claim, no lost luggage risk. The constraint: liquids must be under 3.4 oz each in a single quart-size bag. Solid toiletry versions (shampoo bars, solid deodorant) solve this and save weight.
How do I pack to minimize wrinkles?
Bundle packing (wrapping clothes around a central bundle rather than folding flat) and packing cubes both reduce wrinkles compared to flat folding. Rolling clothes reduces wrinkles in casual items. For dress clothes, packing them in the dry-cleaning bag they came in or a dedicated garment folder helps significantly.
