Numerology is one of the oldest systems for understanding personality and life patterns — the idea that numbers aren't just quantities but carry meaning. Whether you take it literally or use it as a reflective tool, calculating your life path number takes about 30 seconds and often produces surprisingly resonant descriptions.

Life Path Number: Birth Date Method

Your life path number comes from reducing your full birth date to a single digit (with exceptions for master numbers 11, 22, and 33).

Step-by-step:
  1. Write out your birth date as numbers: DD / MM / YYYY
  2. Reduce each section to a single digit by adding the digits
  3. Add those three reduced numbers
  4. Reduce again if needed
Example — born June 15, 1992:
  • Day: 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
  • Month: 06 → 6
  • Year: 1992 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
  • Sum: 6 + 6 + 3 = 15 → 1 + 5 = Life Path 6
Stop at 11, 22, or 33 — these are master numbers and aren't reduced further.

Name Number: Pythagorean System

The Pythagorean chart assigns numbers to letters based on their position in the alphabet:

NumberLetters
1A, J, S
2B, K, T
3C, L, U
4D, M, V
5E, N, W
6F, O, X
7G, P, Y
8H, Q, Z
9I, R
Add the values for every letter in your full name, then reduce to a single digit. Use the name on your birth certificate for your Expression Number; your common first name for your Soul Urge Number.

Chaldean vs. Pythagorean

There are two main numerology systems. Pythagorean (shown above) is the most widely used in Western numerology and maps letters sequentially. Chaldean numerology, one of the oldest systems, assigns numbers 1–8 only and weights letters differently based on their vibrational frequencies. Neither is objectively correct — they're different interpretive lenses.

Most modern numerology apps and calculators default to Pythagorean, which is what CalcHub uses.

How accurate is numerology?

It's not a predictive science — no numerologist can tell you what's going to happen next Tuesday. What numerology does well is provide a framework for self-reflection. Many people find their life path number description uncannily accurate for their personality tendencies, even if the mechanism isn't empirically validated.

What's the difference between Life Path and Expression Number?

Life path comes from your birth date and describes your overall journey and core tendencies. Expression number comes from your full birth name and describes your innate talents and capabilities. Soul Urge (vowels only) describes your inner motivation.

Is 11 really different from 2?

Yes, in numerology. Master number 11 amplifies the sensitivity and partnership themes of 2 but adds a visionary, intuitive dimension. People with master numbers are said to carry greater potential but also face stronger internal conflicts.
