Writing a cheque, filling out a legal document, or typing a bank transfer — all of these require numbers spelled out in words. And in India, the words depend on which numbering system you're using: the Indian system (with lakhs and crores) or the international system (with millions and billions). They slice up the same number differently.

Use CalcHub's number to words converter for instant conversion in either system, or reference the tables below.

Indian vs International Numbering Systems

The fundamental difference: Indian numbers group by twos after the first three digits. International numbers group by threes throughout.

International System Reference

For salary packages, startup valuations, and global financial documents that use the international system:

NumberInternational Words
1,000,000One Million
5,000,000Five Million
10,000,000Ten Million
100,000,000One Hundred Million
1,000,000,000One Billion
1,000,000,000,000One Trillion

Converting Between Systems

The shortcut for quick mental conversion:

  • 1 Lakh = 0.1 Million (100 thousand)
  • 10 Lakh = 1 Million
  • 1 Crore = 10 Million
  • 100 Crore = 1 Billion
  • 1 Lakh Crore = 1 Trillion
So when a news report says "₹5 crore budget" — that's ₹50 million. And "₹10,000 crore deal" = ₹100 billion.

Writing Rules for Cheques

  1. Start at the leftmost position (highest denomination)
  2. Write "and" only before the last element in some styles (not required in Indian banking)
  3. Add "Only" at the end to prevent fraud
  4. Cross out remaining space with a horizontal line
  5. Capitalize the first letter
Example: ₹3,47,500 → Three Lakh Forty-Seven Thousand Five Hundred Only

How do I write 75 lakhs in the international system?

75 lakh = 75 × 1,00,000 = 75,00,000 = 7.5 million (Seven Million Five Hundred Thousand).

How do I write 2.5 crore in words?

2.5 crore = 2,50,00,000 = Two Crore Fifty Lakh (Indian) = Twenty-Five Million (International).

What comes after crore in the Indian system?

After crore (10⁷) comes Arab (10⁹), then Kharab (10¹¹), then Neel (10¹³). These aren't used in everyday commerce but appear in historical texts.
