Mulch Calculator — How Much Mulch Do You Need? (Cubic Yards & Bags)
Calculate mulch needed for garden beds, landscaping, and tree rings. Enter area and depth to get cubic yards and number of bags. Includes coverage by mulch type.
Buying too little mulch means a second trip; buying too much means wasting money and storage space. The CalcHub Mulch Calculator tells you exactly how much you need — in cubic yards (for bulk delivery) and bags (for retail purchase).
The Formula
Cubic yards = Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) / 324The 324 factor converts square feet × inches into cubic yards (27 cubic feet per cubic yard × 12 inches per foot = 324).
Quick Reference Table
| Area (sq ft) | 2" Deep | 3" Deep | 4" Deep | 6" Deep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 0.31 yd³ | 0.46 yd³ | 0.62 yd³ | 0.93 yd³ |
| 100 | 0.62 yd³ | 0.93 yd³ | 1.23 yd³ | 1.85 yd³ |
| 200 | 1.23 yd³ | 1.85 yd³ | 2.47 yd³ | 3.70 yd³ |
| 300 | 1.85 yd³ | 2.78 yd³ | 3.70 yd³ | 5.56 yd³ |
| 500 | 3.09 yd³ | 4.63 yd³ | 6.17 yd³ | 9.26 yd³ |
| 1,000 | 6.17 yd³ | 9.26 yd³ | 12.35 yd³ | 18.52 yd³ |
Bags Needed
Standard mulch bags are 2 cubic feet each:
| Cubic Yards Needed | Number of 2-cu-ft Bags |
|---|---|
| 0.5 yd³ | 7 bags |
| 1 yd³ | 14 bags |
| 2 yd³ | 27 bags |
| 3 yd³ | 41 bags |
| 5 yd³ | 68 bags |
| 10 yd³ | 135 bags |
Recommended Depth by Use
| Application | Recommended Depth | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flower beds | 2–3 inches | Light coverage, weed suppression |
| Garden paths | 3–4 inches | Foot traffic durability |
| Tree rings | 2–4 inches | Moisture retention (keep away from trunk) |
| Playground areas | 6–12 inches | Safety cushioning |
| Slope erosion control | 4–6 inches | Prevent washout |
| New landscape beds | 3–4 inches | Establish weed barrier |
| Top-up (existing mulch) | 1–2 inches | Annual refresh |
Mulch Types and Coverage
| Mulch Type | Weight per yd³ | Best For | Decomposition Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood bark | ~800 lbs | Flower beds, walkways | Slow (2–3 years) |
| Cedar mulch | ~600 lbs | Insect-prone areas | Slow (3+ years) |
| Pine straw | ~300 lbs | Acid-loving plants | Medium (1–2 years) |
| Rubber mulch | ~1,300 lbs | Playgrounds | Very slow (10+ years) |
| Cocoa shell | ~600 lbs | Decorative beds | Medium (1–2 years) |
| Colored mulch | ~800 lbs | Curb appeal | Slow (color fades in 1 year) |
| Straw/hay | ~400 lbs | Vegetable gardens | Fast (1 season) |
Common Shapes
Rectangular Bed
Area = Length × Width 10 ft × 20 ft = 200 sq ft at 3" deep = 1.85 yd³Circular Tree Ring
Area = π × radius² 6-foot diameter (3 ft radius): π × 3² = 28.3 sq ft at 3" deep = 0.26 yd³Irregular Bed
Break into rectangles and triangles, calculate each area, sum them. How to Use the Calculator
- Open the CalcHub Mulch Calculator
- Enter bed dimensions (length × width, or select shape)
- Enter desired depth (inches)

How often should I replace mulch?
Most organic mulches need refreshing annually — add 1–2 inches on top of existing mulch. Full replacement every 2–3 years. Rubber and stone mulch last much longer but don't add nutrients to soil.
Can I put too much mulch?
Yes. More than 4 inches (except playgrounds) can prevent water from reaching roots, create fungal problems, and suffocate shallow-rooted plants. The "mulch volcano" around trees (piling mulch against the trunk) causes rot — keep mulch 3–6 inches away from trunks.
Should I remove old mulch before adding new?
Not necessarily. If the old layer has decomposed to less than 1 inch, add new mulch on top. If it's still 2+ inches thick, rake and redistribute before adding. Only remove old mulch if it's moldy, diseased, or compacted into a water-repelling mat.
