LED Savings Calculator: How Much Can You Save by Switching Bulbs?
Compare LED vs incandescent and CFL bulbs. Calculate annual energy savings, payback period, and total cost of ownership with real wattage and lifespan data.
Switching to LED lighting is one of those rare home improvements where the math is completely one-sided. The savings are real, the payback period is short, and the bulbs last long enough that you'll forget when you installed them. Yet plenty of households are still running incandescent or CFL bulbs — often because the higher upfront price of LEDs feels like a barrier.
The LED Savings Calculator on CalcHub makes the numbers concrete: enter your current bulbs, usage hours, and electricity rate, and see exactly how much you'll save and when you'll break even.
How the Calculation Works
The core formula is straightforward:
Annual energy cost = Wattage × Daily hours × 365 days ÷ 1000 × Electricity rate (₹/kWh)
Do this for your current bulb and your replacement LED, subtract, and you have annual savings per bulb. Multiply by the number of bulbs in your home and the savings start looking meaningful.
Bulb Comparison: The Numbers Side by Side
| Bulb Type | Wattage (800 lm) | Lifespan | Annual Cost* | Replacement Freq. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Incandescent | 60W | ~1,000 hrs | ₹1,051 | Every 4–6 months |
| Halogen | 43W | ~2,000 hrs | ₹752 | Every 8–10 months |
| CFL | 13–15W | ~8,000 hrs | ₹245 | Every 3–4 years |
| LED | 8–10W | ~25,000 hrs | ₹157 | Every 10–15 years |
A single LED replacing a single incandescent saves roughly ₹900 per year. A home with 10 bulbs saves ₹9,000 annually. Over the lifespan of the LED — which can stretch to 25 years with moderate use — that one bulb replaces 25 incandescents.
The Payback Period Reality
LEDs cost more upfront — typically ₹80–₹200 per bulb vs. ₹15–₹30 for an incandescent. But divide that price difference by the monthly savings and you get the payback period.
At 8 hours per day and ₹8/kWh:
- An LED at ₹150 vs. incandescent at ₹20: extra cost = ₹130
- Monthly savings: ~₹75
- Payback: under 2 months
After that, it's pure savings for the next 10–15 years.
What to Actually Look For When Buying LEDs
The wattage number on the box is almost meaningless on its own — it tells you power consumption, not brightness. What matters is lumens, not watts. Some cheap LEDs claim 9W but only emit 600 lumens (dim). A quality 9W LED should deliver 800–900 lumens.
Other things worth checking:
- Color temperature — 2700K is warm/yellow (good for bedrooms), 4000K is neutral white (kitchens, offices), 6500K is cool/daylight (workshops, task lighting)
- CRI (Color Rendering Index) — above 80 is good, above 90 is excellent for accurate color
- Brand and warranty — Philips, Syska, Wipro, Havells, and Orient all offer 2–3 year warranties on their LED range in India
Beyond the Bulbs: Other LED Opportunities
Tube lights are often overlooked. A standard 40W fluorescent tube replaced with an 18W LED tube saves roughly ₹600–₹700 per year per fixture. Many homes and offices have 10–20 tube lights — the savings there dwarf what you'd get from switching just the bulbs.
Street lights, shop signs, and outdoor floodlights are also worth calculating separately given their longer daily usage hours.
Do LEDs work with dimmer switches?
Not all of them. You need bulbs specifically marked "dimmable." Standard LEDs on a dimmer circuit will often flicker or hum. Check the packaging before buying if you have dimmer switches.
Are LED savings real or just marketing?
The savings are real and well-documented. India's UJALA scheme, which distributed 36 crore LED bulbs between 2015 and 2019, was independently estimated to have saved over 46 billion kWh of electricity annually — about 9% of India's annual residential consumption at the time.
Does the calculator account for bulb replacement costs?
Yes. The CalcHub LED Savings Calculator factors in the cost of replacing short-lived bulbs over the same time period, so you're comparing true total cost of ownership — not just electricity.
