Horsepower and torque are both thrown around in car discussions as if everyone knows exactly what they mean and how they relate. Most people don't. The Fundamental Relationship

Horsepower, torque, and RPM are connected by a simple formula:

Horsepower = (Torque × RPM) / 5,252

The 5,252 is a constant derived from the conversion of RPM to radians per second. This means horsepower always equals torque at 5,252 RPM. Below that RPM, torque is higher than HP. Above it, HP is higher.

This is why horsepower and torque curves always cross at 5,252 RPM on a dyno chart — it's mathematics, not engine tuning.

High-revving engines often make less torque than diesel engines, but make much more horsepower because power = torque × RPM. A Formula 1 engine making 320 lb-ft at 12,000 RPM produces over 730 horsepower.

Mechanical vs. Metric Horsepower

There are actually two versions:

  • Mechanical (imperial) horsepower (hp): 550 ft-lbs/second = 745.7 watts
  • Metric horsepower (PS/CV/ch): 75 kg-m/s = 735.5 watts
The difference is about 1.4%. German and Japanese manufacturers often use PS; American manufacturers use hp. The calculator converts between both, plus kilowatts (kW) used in some markets. Power figures represent theoretical calculations from torque and RPM data. Real-world power at the wheels is reduced by drivetrain losses of 10–20%.

What's the difference between crank horsepower and wheel horsepower?

Crank horsepower (bhp) is measured at the engine before the transmission and drivetrain. Wheel horsepower (whp) is measured at the wheels after all drivetrain losses. Typically, whp is 15–20% lower than bhp for RWD vehicles, and slightly more for AWD. When a manufacturer says "500 hp," they mean crank horsepower.

Does higher torque mean faster acceleration?

It helps, especially at lower RPMs and for heavier vehicles. Torque is what actually propels the car at any given instant; horsepower is the sustained rate of work. A diesel truck with massive low-end torque feels effortlessly quick off the line. A high-revving sports car needs to be kept in the power band to feel fast — it's less immediately impressive but can sustain higher acceleration at speed.

Can I increase horsepower without modifying the engine?

Not significantly. Cold air intakes and exhaust modifications can add a few percent on naturally aspirated engines. On forced-induction (turbo/supercharged) engines, a tune that adjusts boost pressure and fueling can add 15–25% without hardware changes — but it also increases stress on engine components.
