GST calculations are something every Indian business deals with daily — and the reverse calculation (finding the base price from a GST-inclusive amount) trips people up constantly. The CalcHub GST Calculator handles both directions instantly for all four GST slabs.

Add GST to a Price

Formula: GST amount = Base price × GST rate / 100
Base Price (₹)+ 5% GST+ 12% GST+ 18% GST+ 28% GST
500₹525₹560₹590₹640
1,000₹1,050₹1,120₹1,180₹1,280
5,000₹5,250₹5,600₹5,900₹6,400
10,000₹10,500₹11,200₹11,800₹12,800
50,000₹52,500₹56,000₹59,000₹64,000
1,00,000₹1,05,000₹1,12,000₹1,18,000₹1,28,000

Remove GST from an Inclusive Price

This is the calculation most people get wrong. You cannot simply subtract 18% from the inclusive price.

Formula: Base price = Inclusive price / (1 + GST rate / 100)
Inclusive Price (₹)Base (5% GST)Base (12% GST)Base (18% GST)Base (28% GST)
1,000₹952₹893₹847₹781
5,000₹4,762₹4,464₹4,237₹3,906
10,000₹9,524₹8,929₹8,475₹7,813
25,000₹23,810₹22,321₹21,186₹19,531
1,00,000₹95,238₹89,286₹84,746₹78,125
Common mistake: 18% of ₹10,000 = ₹1,800. But if ₹10,000 is GST-inclusive, the GST component is actually ₹1,525 (on a base of ₹8,475), not ₹1,800. This error costs businesses real money on invoicing.

CGST, SGST, and IGST Breakdown

Transaction TypeTax Split
Within same state (intra-state)CGST (half) + SGST (half)
Between different states (inter-state)IGST (full rate)
Example: ₹10,000 service at 18% GST
  • Intra-state: CGST ₹900 + SGST ₹900 = ₹1,800 total
  • Inter-state: IGST ₹1,800
The total GST is the same — only the split changes.

Input Tax Credit (Quick Reference)

If you're a registered business, the GST you pay on purchases (input) can be deducted from GST you collect on sales (output):

Net GST payable = Output GST − Input GST

Example: Collected ₹36,000 GST on sales, paid ₹18,000 GST on purchases → pay ₹18,000 to government.

Do I need to charge GST on my freelance income?

If your annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states), GST registration is mandatory. Below that, it's optional. Freelance/consulting services fall under 18% GST.

Why do some restaurants charge 5% and others 18%?

Non-AC restaurants and those with turnover below ₹1.5 crore can opt for the 5% composition scheme (no ITC). AC restaurants, 5-star hotels, and those opting for regular scheme charge 18% (with ITC). The 5% rate doesn't allow input tax credit.

Is GST charged on rent?

Commercial rent: 18% GST (ITC available to tenant). Residential rent: exempt from GST. This distinction matters for home offices — if your landlord bills commercially, you pay GST; if residentially, you don't.
