Flight distance isn't the same as driving distance, and it's not even the same as "distance on a map." The shortest path between two points on a sphere is a great circle route, which is why flights from the US to Japan arc north over Alaska on a Mercator map rather than heading straight west. Great Circle vs. Straight Line on a Map

A map projection distorts distances. The shortest route from New York to London doesn't go due east — it curves north over the Atlantic. That great circle route is roughly 3,459 miles. Flying "straight east" across the same projection would actually be longer.

This is why polar routes (arcing over the Arctic) are common for North America–Asia flights. It looks longer on a flat map but is shorter in reality.

Estimated Flight Time Calculation

The calculator uses an average commercial cruising speed of 550–575 mph (880–925 km/h), with an additional 30–45 minutes factored in for taxi, climb, and descent. This gives a reasonable estimate — actual flight time varies with wind (jet streams can add or subtract up to 2 hours on transatlantic routes), routing, and aircraft type.

Tailwind flights from Europe to North America are routinely 45–90 minutes shorter than the return headwind flight on identical routes.

Using Distance for Upgrade Point Calculations

Frequent flyers earn miles and points based on distance flown (on most programs). Knowing the exact route distance helps you predict award mile accrual for upcoming trips, particularly useful when you're chasing elite status or planning redemptions.

Distances are calculated using the Haversine formula for great circle distance. Actual flight routing by airlines may differ from the shortest great circle path due to airspace restrictions, wind optimization, and operational considerations.

Why do some flights take longer than the distance suggests?

Several factors: headwinds (especially westbound transatlantic), mandatory routing around restricted airspace (wars, volcanic ash, political restrictions), holding patterns during congestion, and longer taxi times at busy airports. Distance is the baseline; operational factors adjust upward or downward from there.

Does flying east or west affect flight duration on the same route?

Yes, significantly. The jet stream blows west-to-east across the North Atlantic and North Pacific at 100–200 mph. Eastbound flights get a powerful tailwind; westbound flights fight a headwind. New York to London takes about 7 hours; London to New York takes 8–9 hours for the same flight at the same cruising speed.

How is flight distance different from driving distance?

Flight distance is the straight-line distance over the curve of the Earth. Driving distance follows roads and can be significantly longer, especially across oceans or around mountain ranges. A drive from New York to Los Angeles is about 2,800 miles; the flight distance is about 2,451 miles.
