Need to roll dice but don't have any? The CalcHub Dice Roller simulates fair dice rolls for board games, tabletop RPGs, classroom exercises, decision-making, or any situation where you need random numbers.

Quick Roll Reference

Dice TypeRangeCommon Use
D4 (tetrahedron)1–4D&D damage rolls, small weapons
D6 (cube)1–6Board games, Yahtzee, Monopoly, Ludo
D8 (octahedron)1–8D&D longsword damage
D10 (decahedron)1–10 (or 0–9)Percentile rolls, World of Darkness
D12 (dodecahedron)1–12D&D greataxe damage
D20 (icosahedron)1–20D&D attack/save/check rolls
D100 (percentile)1–100Percentile checks, critical hit tables

How to Use the Dice Roller

  1. Open the CalcHub Dice Roller
  2. Select dice type (D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, or custom)
  3. Choose number of dice (1–100)
  4. Click Roll
  5. See individual results, total sum, and roll history

Multiple Dice Probabilities (2D6)

Two six-sided dice is the most common combination (Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, craps):

SumCombinationsProbability
21 (1+1)2.78%
325.56%
438.33%
5411.11%
6513.89%
7616.67% (most likely)
8513.89%
9411.11%
1038.33%
1125.56%
1212.78%
7 is the most common result when rolling 2D6 — six different ways to make it. This is why 7 is special in craps and why Settlers of Catan tiles near 7 produce the most resources.

D20 Probability (Dungeons & Dragons)

Every number on a D20 has an equal 5% chance. For D&D players:

Roll NeededProbability of Success
2+ (need anything but 1)95%
5+80%
10+55%
11+50% (coin flip)
15+30%
18+15%
20 (natural 20)5%
With advantage (roll 2D20, take higher):
Roll NeededNormalWith Advantage
11+50%75%
15+30%51%
205%9.75%
Advantage nearly doubles your chance of hitting high rolls — this is why it's such a powerful mechanic.

Common Dice Notation

RPG players use standard notation:

2d6Roll two 6-sided dice, sum them2–12
3d6Roll three 6-sided dice, sum them3–18

2d10 (percentile)Two D10s for 01–1001–100

Uses Beyond Gaming

Classroom activities: Teachers use dice for random number generation in math exercises, probability lessons, and student selection. Decision making: Can't decide? Assign options to numbers and roll. It's surprisingly effective for breaking decision paralysis. Statistics education: Rolling physical or virtual dice is the best way to understand probability distributions, expected value, and the law of large numbers. Fitness: Random workout generators often use dice — roll a D6 for exercise type, D10 for reps. Party games: Truth or dare, drinking games, and ice-breaker activities frequently use dice.

Are Online Dice Rolls Fair?

Yes — online dice rollers use pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) that produce statistically uniform distributions. Over thousands of rolls, each face appears with equal probability. The CalcHub Dice Roller uses cryptographically seeded random generation for fairness.

Physical dice, ironically, can be less fair — manufacturing imperfections, worn edges, and loading can bias results. A well-made online roller is more consistently random than most physical dice.

What's the average roll for each dice type?

DiceAverage Roll
D42.5
D63.5
D84.5
D105.5
D126.5
D2010.5
Formula: Average = (minimum + maximum) / 2. For any dice with faces 1 to N, the average is (N+1)/2.

How do I generate D&D ability scores?

The standard method is 4d6 drop lowest: roll four D6, remove the lowest die, and sum the remaining three. This produces scores ranging from 3 to 18, with an average of ~12.24 (slightly above the 10.5 average of 3d6). Repeat six times for all abilities.

Can I use the dice roller for lottery numbers?

You can, but lottery numbers require true randomness across a specific range (not dice-shaped). Use the Random Number Generator instead — it lets you set any range.
