Cubic Feet Calculator — Volume in Cubic Feet, Yards & Meters
Calculate volume in cubic feet for rooms, containers, shipping, concrete, mulch, and gravel. Convert between cubic feet, yards, and meters.
Cubic feet (cu ft or ft³) measures three-dimensional volume — how much space something occupies or how much material you need to fill a space. It's used for shipping containers, room volume, concrete orders, mulch, soil, gravel, and storage capacity.
The CalcHub Cubic Feet Calculator computes volume for any rectangular, cylindrical, or irregular shape.
Basic Formula
Cubic Feet = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Height (ft)| Length | Width | Height | Cubic Feet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft | 3 ft | 2 ft | 24 cu ft |
| 6 ft | 4 ft | 3 ft | 72 cu ft |
| 10 ft | 8 ft | 5 ft | 400 cu ft |
| 12 ft | 10 ft | 8 ft | 960 cu ft |
| 20 ft | 15 ft | 10 ft | 3,000 cu ft |

Construction Materials
Concrete
Concrete is ordered by cubic yards (US) or cubic meters (India/metric):| Slab Dimensions | Thickness | Cubic Feet | Cubic Yards | Cubic Meters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10×10 ft | 4" (0.33 ft) | 33 | 1.22 | 0.93 |
| 20×10 ft | 4" | 67 | 2.48 | 1.89 |
| 20×20 ft | 6" (0.5 ft) | 200 | 7.41 | 5.66 |
| 30×30 ft | 4" | 300 | 11.11 | 8.50 |
Mulch / Soil / Gravel
These materials are sold by cubic yard:| Area (sq ft) | 2" Deep | 3" Deep | 4" Deep | 6" Deep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 0.62 yd³ | 0.93 yd³ | 1.23 yd³ | 1.85 yd³ |
| 200 | 1.23 yd³ | 1.85 yd³ | 2.47 yd³ | 3.70 yd³ |
| 500 | 3.09 yd³ | 4.63 yd³ | 6.17 yd³ | 9.26 yd³ |
| 1,000 | 6.17 yd³ | 9.26 yd³ | 12.35 yd³ | 18.52 yd³ |
Room Volume (HVAC)
Room volume determines AC and heater sizing:| Room (sq ft) | 8 ft ceiling | 9 ft ceiling | 10 ft ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120 | 960 cu ft | 1,080 cu ft | 1,200 cu ft |
| 200 | 1,600 cu ft | 1,800 cu ft | 2,000 cu ft |
| 300 | 2,400 cu ft | 2,700 cu ft | 3,000 cu ft |
| 500 | 4,000 cu ft | 4,500 cu ft | 5,000 cu ft |
Measuring in Inches? Convert First
If your measurements are in inches: divide each by 12 to get feet, then multiply.
Example: Box is 24" × 18" × 12" = 2 ft × 1.5 ft × 1 ft = 3 cubic feetOr: (24 × 18 × 12) / 1,728 = 5,184 / 1,728 = 3 cubic feet

How many cubic feet is a refrigerator?
Mini fridge: 3–5 cu ft. Standard: 18–22 cu ft. French door: 22–28 cu ft. Side-by-side: 20–26 cu ft. This is internal usable volume.
What's the difference between cubic feet and board feet?
Cubic feet measures 3D volume. Board feet measures lumber volume: 1 board foot = 1 ft × 1 ft × 1 inch (144 cubic inches or 1/12 cubic foot). Board feet is used exclusively for lumber pricing.
How do I calculate cubic feet for an irregular shape?
Fill the space with water (if possible) and measure the water volume. Otherwise, approximate by breaking the shape into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, and sum them.
