How to Calculate Days Between Two Dates

The formula sounds obvious but the edge cases trip people up:

  1. Note both dates (start and end)
  2. Count the difference in calendar days
  3. Decide whether to include the start date, end date, or both
Including or excluding days: If today is March 28 and the event is April 3, the gap is 6 days. But "6 days from now" is April 3 if you don't count today, or April 2 if you do. Most countdown apps count from the end of today to the start of the target date.

For manual calculation: convert both dates to day-of-year numbers, subtract, and adjust for year boundaries.

For exams especially, counting up (days studied) rather than counting down (days remaining) has been shown to reduce anxiety while still keeping the deadline visible.

How do I calculate days between two dates manually?

Convert both dates to their Julian day number (a running count of days from a fixed reference point), then subtract. For most purposes, the months table method works: add the days in each month between your two dates.

Does the countdown calculator include or exclude today?

Most countdown calculators (including CalcHub's) count from the end of the current day. So if today is March 28 and your event is April 1, the result is 4 days (March 29, 30, 31, April 1).

What's the difference between business days and calendar days?

Calendar days count every day including weekends. Business days count only Monday through Friday, minus public holidays. A "5-day" delivery guarantee means 5 business days — typically 7 calendar days if there's a weekend in between.
