So a Metal Rat (born 1960 or 2020) behaves somewhat differently from a Wood Rat (1984) or Water Rat (1972), at least according to Chinese astrological tradition.

In Chinese astrology, the year your own animal returns is called your Ben Ming Nian — and it's considered an unlucky year in traditional belief. The solution is to wear red (ideally gifted by family) and avoid major life changes. It sounds superstitious, but it's taken seriously enough that major life events like marriage and business launches are genuinely avoided in these years by many people.

Is the Chinese zodiac based on the Lunar New Year?

Yes — if you were born before the Lunar New Year in your birth year, your Chinese zodiac year might actually be the previous year's animal. For example, someone born in late January 1988 might be a Rabbit, not a Dragon, because Lunar New Year 1988 (which began the Dragon year) fell in February. Our calculator accounts for this.

Which Chinese zodiac year is the luckiest?

Dragon years are widely considered the most auspicious in Chinese culture, which is why Dragon birth years consistently see birth rate spikes in China and neighboring countries. Snake and Rat years are also considered favorable for different reasons.
