You've worked hard for your 8.4 CGPA — but then you fill out a job application that asks for your percentage, and suddenly you're not sure if you should type 75.6% or 84% or something else entirely. And if you're applying abroad, there's a whole separate conversion to the 4.0 GPA scale.

The CalcHub CGPA to Percentage Calculator handles all the common conversions and tells you which formula applies to your specific university system.

The Most Common Conversion Methods

1. Indian Universities — 10-Point Scale

Most Indian universities (following UGC/CBSE guidelines) use a simple formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

So a 8.4 CGPA = 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%

CGPAPercentage (×9.5)Grade
10.095.0%O (Outstanding)
9.085.5%A+
8.076.0%A
7.066.5%B+
6.057.0%B
5.047.5%C

2. Anna University Formula

Anna University uses a different multiplier: Percentage = CGPA × 10 - 7.5

A 7.5 CGPA at Anna University = (7.5 × 10) - 7.5 = 67.5%

3. VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University)

Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

4. US 4.0 Scale to Percentage

Less standardized, but roughly:

  • 4.0 GPA ≈ 95–100%

  • 3.5 GPA ≈ 87–91%

  • 3.0 GPA ≈ 80–84%

  • 2.5 GPA ≈ 73–77%

Which Formula Should You Use?

Check your university's official guidelines first. If your marksheet or transcripts include a percentage calculation, that's your authoritative answer. If not, use the UGC formula (×9.5) for Indian central university systems, and look up your specific state or autonomous university's published conversion.

For employers, mention which system you used: "8.4 CGPA (79.8% per UGC conversion)" is more transparent than just listing a percentage.

Converting to US 4.0 Scale for Grad School Applications

If you're applying to US graduate schools, they'll ask for a 4.0 equivalent. The WES (World Education Services) formula is most widely accepted:

Indian PercentageUS 4.0 GPA Equivalent
90–100%4.0
80–89%3.5–3.9
70–79%3.0–3.4
60–69%2.5–2.9
50–59%2.0–2.4
Most US universities accept WES evaluations for official transcripts rather than self-calculated conversions, so use this as guidance rather than a definitive answer.

My university uses a 7-point scale, not 10-point. What do I do?

The calculator supports 7-point and custom-scale conversion too. Enter your scale's maximum and your CGPA, and it proportionally converts to a percentage.

Can I use this conversion for job applications in India?

Yes. For most Indian employers and government job forms, the ×9.5 multiplier or your university's official formula is acceptable. Include the conversion methodology if space permits.

Does CGPA to percentage affect graduate school admissions?

Most graduate programs care more about the raw CGPA and whether your institution is recognized than the percentage conversion. However, some scholarship applications and fellowship forms require a percentage — that's where this calculator earns its keep.
