Blood Alcohol Calculator (BAC) — Estimate Your Blood Alcohol Level
Estimate your blood alcohol concentration based on drinks consumed, body weight, gender, and time elapsed. Understand BAC levels, legal limits, and metabolism.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) measures the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream as a percentage. It determines how impaired you are, whether you're legally allowed to drive, and roughly how long until you're sober again. The CalcHub BAC Calculator provides an estimate — but it's an estimate, not a breathalyzer.
Important: This calculator provides rough estimates for educational purposes. Individual metabolism varies significantly. Never drive if you've been drinking, regardless of what any calculator says. How BAC Is Calculated
The Widmark formula is the most widely used:
BAC = (Alcohol consumed in grams / (Body weight in grams × r)) − (0.015 × hours since first drink)Where r = body water constant (0.68 for males, 0.55 for females).
Standard Drinks
One "standard drink" contains approximately 14 grams (0.6 oz) of pure alcohol:
| Drink | Volume | ABV | Standard Drinks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beer (regular) | 330 mL (1 bottle) | 5% | ~1 |
| Beer (strong) | 330 mL | 8% | ~1.6 |
| Wine | 150 mL (1 glass) | 12% | ~1.4 |
| Whiskey/rum/vodka | 30 mL (1 peg) | 40% | ~1 |
| Whiskey/rum/vodka | 60 mL (large peg) | 40% | ~2 |
| Cocktail | Varies | Varies | 1.5–3 |
BAC Levels and Effects
| BAC (%) | Typical Effects | Impairment |
|---|---|---|
| 0.02% | Slight warmth, relaxation | Minimal |
| 0.05% | Lowered inhibitions, mild euphoria | Judgment begins to decline |
| 0.08% | Impaired coordination, reaction time | Legal limit in most countries |
| 0.10% | Slurred speech, poor balance | Significant impairment |
| 0.15% | Major loss of balance, vomiting possible | Severely impaired |
| 0.20% | Confusion, disorientation | Dangerous |
| 0.30% | Stupor, risk of unconsciousness | Life-threatening |
| 0.40%+ | Coma, risk of death | Medical emergency |
Legal Driving Limits
| Country/Region | BAC Limit |
|---|---|
| India | 0.03% (30 mg/100 mL) — among the strictest |
| USA | 0.08% |
| UK | 0.08% (0.05% in Scotland) |
| Australia | 0.05% |
| Germany | 0.05% |
| Japan | 0.03% |
| UAE | 0.00% (zero tolerance) |
| Sweden | 0.02% |
BAC Estimation by Body Weight
After 2 standard drinks on an empty stomach (male):| Body Weight | Estimated BAC | Over India Limit? |
|---|---|---|
| 60 kg | 0.055% | Yes |
| 70 kg | 0.047% | Yes |
| 80 kg | 0.041% | Yes |
| 90 kg | 0.037% | Yes |
| 100 kg | 0.033% | Yes |
How Long Until You're Sober
Your body metabolizes alcohol at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour (about one standard drink per hour). This rate is relatively constant regardless of body size — your liver can only process so fast.
| Starting BAC | Time to Reach 0.00% |
|---|---|
| 0.03% | ~2 hours |
| 0.05% | ~3.5 hours |
| 0.08% | ~5.5 hours |
| 0.10% | ~7 hours |
| 0.15% | ~10 hours |
| 0.20% | ~13 hours |
Factors That Affect BAC
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Body weight | Higher weight = lower BAC for same amount |
| Gender | Women typically reach higher BAC than men (lower body water percentage) |
| Empty vs full stomach | Food slows absorption, lowering peak BAC by 20–30% |
| Drink speed | Faster drinking = higher peak BAC |
| Alcohol tolerance | Doesn't change BAC — you're still impaired, just feel it less |
| Medications | Many drugs interact with alcohol, increasing impairment |
| Age | Older adults may be more affected at the same BAC |
Does eating food really help?
Food slows alcohol absorption, reducing peak BAC. Eating before or while drinking can lower your peak BAC by 20–30%. But it doesn't prevent impairment — it just delays it. A full stomach doesn't make you safe to drive.
Can I trust a personal breathalyzer?
Consumer breathalyzers vary widely in accuracy — some cheap models are off by 50% or more. Professional-grade personal breathalyzers (₹5,000–₹15,000) are more reliable but still not as accurate as police equipment. Use them as a rough guide, not a definitive answer.
What's the penalty for drunk driving in India?
First offense: up to 6 months imprisonment and/or ₹10,000 fine. Second offense (within 3 years): up to 2 years imprisonment and/or ₹15,000 fine. Additionally, your license can be suspended. For accidents causing injury or death while intoxicated, penalties are much more severe.
