You've got an image at 3840×2160 and need it at 1200 pixels wide for a website header. If you just set the width and forget the height, you'll end up with a stretched, squashed mess. Aspect ratio is what keeps proportions locked.

The aspect ratio calculator on CalcHub handles the math in a second — enter any two dimensions and find the third.

What Aspect Ratio Means

Aspect ratio is simply the relationship between width and height, expressed as W:H. A 1920×1080 image is 16:9. A 1200×1200 Instagram square is 1:1. A standard photo print is roughly 3:2.

The ratio itself doesn't say anything about the actual pixel dimensions — just the proportional relationship. A 4K screen and a small YouTube thumbnail can both be 16:9.

Common Aspect Ratios

RatioCommon UseExample Dimensions
1:1Instagram square, avatars1080×1080
4:3Classic TV, older monitors1024×768
3:2DSLR/mirrorless sensors6000×4000
16:9HD/4K video, YouTube1920×1080, 3840×2160
9:16Vertical video, Stories1080×1920
2.39:1Anamorphic/cinema widescreen2560×1070
5:4Medium format, some prints1280×1024

How to Use the Calculator

To find missing dimension: Enter width and either ratio or height, get the missing value. To find simplified ratio: Enter any width × height, get the reduced ratio (e.g., 1280×720 → 16:9). To resize with fixed ratio: Enter original dimensions and new width, get the proportional height automatically.

Black Bars and Letterboxing

When you put a 16:9 video onto a 4:3 screen without adjustment, you get black bars top and bottom (letterboxing). When a 4:3 image gets placed in a 16:9 space, you get bars on the sides (pillarboxing). Knowing both ratios upfront helps you plan compositions or crop before export to avoid this.

For social media, shoot with the final ratio in mind. Instagram Reels are 9:16 — if you shoot 16:9 and crop vertically, you lose a lot of frame.

Responsive Web Design

Web images often need to maintain aspect ratio while fitting different container sizes. CSS handles this with aspect-ratio property or the classic padding-top trick. The calculator helps you set the exact percentage value: (height ÷ width × 100)%. A 16:9 image needs a 56.25% padding-top value to maintain ratio when width is fluid.

How do I crop a photo to a specific aspect ratio?

Most editing software lets you set a crop ratio constraint before cropping. In Lightroom, press R for the crop tool and set a custom ratio. In Photoshop, set width and height in the crop tool options. The CalcHub calculator helps you find the exact pixel dimensions for your target size.

What aspect ratio should I use for YouTube thumbnails?

YouTube thumbnails display at 16:9 in most contexts. The minimum recommended size is 1280×720 pixels. Using a different ratio causes YouTube to add black bars or crop your thumbnail in unpredictable ways.

Does aspect ratio affect print size?

Yes. Standard photo prints (4×6, 5×7, 8×10) use different ratios. A 4×6 is 3:2, matching most camera sensors. An 8×10 is 4:5, which means cropping a camera-native 3:2 file. The print size calculator can show you how much you'll lose.
